Is anyone familiar with Nantucket sinks?

I love my Kraus sink but we’re moving and I am redoing my kitchen. I saw a Nantucket sink similar to Kohler Prolific but it has smoother ledges to hold colanders, cutting boards, etc Suggestions please!!

See my comments in this old thread below. We have had it installed since April and it is a great sink. The only thing that I changed was the colander. I purchased an expandable colander that can fit on either ledge. I originally purchased the Prolific and the one that was shipped to me had some bad weld spots, so it went back. Because I use this as a prep sink, I do not store the colander or cutting board, but keep them on the sink at all times. The colander slides under the board, leaving a nice amount of space to still turn the water on and work in the sink. I've also purchased off the shelf wood boards that fit on either ledge. On Thanksgiving, we put our large carving board on the first ledge, and my husband was able to carve with no mess on the counters.

Pics with original board, (I use cutting mats over it), wood board and larger Tramontina poly board which fits on lower ledge. I use it for cutting melon which keeps the juice in the sink and not on the counter/cabinet/floor as it sometime did if I was in a hurry. There are many brands of ledge sinks, but for versatility I would encourage purchasing one with multiple ledges. If I were to move and only had one sink, I would definitely install one of these again but in the larger version.

I also loved my Kraus 33" single basin, undermount, but when we moved we had room for a Kohler Stages 45" sink. I love it more, although I wouldn't be devastated if I had to go back to the Kraus 33".

You need to ask yourself several questions:

In the new kitchen, how much room to you have to give to a sink? If you only have ~33", I'm not sure you should choose a sink with ledges as it gets pretty cramped for normal dish rinsing, ready to be washed pots, and such. Did you see the Nantucket sink you potentially liked in person? Did you mimic stuff you usually do at the sink to get a feel for available space? This could be important. An expandable colander (like https://smile.amazon.com/U-S-Kitchen-Supply-Expandable-Vegetables/dp/B01MQCHQHD/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1543180868&sr=8-3&keywords=colander+expandable) can fit any sink and a cutting board can sit on the counter or be placed temporarily across the top of the sink. Not nearly as sexy, but functional.

Which accessories that come with ledged sinks are important to you? I find I use the cutting board every day, usually several times a day (my favorite feature! It stays in place pretty much always.) and the colander 1-4 times a week. Other things are used infrequently. One thing I really do like is the tray that sits next to the cutting board so that when you're cutting onions, celery, peppers, mushrooms, whatever, you can push them all into the handy tray and then take it to the stove and empty it into the skillet. The Stages has a raised portion that comes in handy for thawing frozen things, rinsing poultry, and draining pasta, but those things can be done differently without being overly inconvenient.

The biggest thing I would look at on a sink that has more than one ledge is how many accessories would you really have in play at one time. I keep thinking that sliding the pieces around to get to the thing you want, while still having the water faucet available, would be like playing this sliding puzzle, especially in a shorter length sink.

As always, it comes down to how do you use your sink? Do you cook a lot or a little? Do you cook using mostly cans and boxes/the freezer, or do you cook from the garden? Do you put every dish in the DW right away or do you wait until there's a collection that needs to go in the DW /be washed (that's me)? Are you a solo cook or do helpers also need a space? Try to analyse how you use your sink. Would a single ledge sink make it better? Would a double ledge sink make it more better? Is there still access to the water? There is absolutely no one-size-fits-all answer and you have to figure out what makes sense for your usage.

suzanne_sl has made a lot of good points. Just want to add that with the double ledge on my shorter sink there really is no way to have more than two accessories in the sink at one time. You would have to get something like the wide Galley or the 45" Ruvati if you want more accessories. Love that I don't have to rinse, dry and store either the board or colander and can just stack them off to the side and still use the sink. I rarely take out a footed colander anymore, as it takes up the floor space in the sink but I can continue to use the sink with the hanging colander, whether I am defrosting, draining my coffee mug, or rinsing produce. I always tried to balance a cutting board over my Kraus sink, but inevitably it would slip and fall into the sink so I find the ledges to be safer and cleaner. No big board sitting on the counter that I have to clean and move to wipe down the counters. Any concern about cleaning the ledges is truly no big deal. It's a quick wipe if you want to get water drops off of the ledge. Food does not get stuck on the ledges.

Nantucket sinks are made in China - that may not matter to some, but it does to me.

"...the cost to pull up brand new granite countertops and the plumbing work to reinstall the sink will far exceed $6,000!!!"

Fortunately this is false. Tops are never pulled to replace a sink, the cabinet front is. It's a one-day job for one guy.

I like my 30" Nantucket. I use all the accessories . I got the one with the colander that fits on the lower ledge and the roll up rack. I ordered the board separately since it didnt come with the one with the rack. The roll up rack that sits on the first ledge is really handy. I cook a lot.

Thanks for all the input! I got the Nantucket with cutting board, colander and roll up rack that I keep on it all the time. Just love the sink but it is harder to clean the square corners.

Does anyone have the white Nantucket double bowl sink ? Any feedback would be appreciated

I am having major issues with my fireclay Nantucket sink. they disclosed 1/2“ variance due to fireclay made in Italy, but the difference in the offset is making the undermount installation with stone counters looking horrible. the offset is on the back right corner the other 3 sides are ok, so if you adjust the back the front is off.

    HU:

I'm assuming your cutout is for a positive sink reveal. I rarely recommend a negative reveal, however, in cases like yours, it would disguise the variance pretty well.
