I would select a shrub that matures to the height of the deck, and is attractive over as much of the period that you will be sitting on that porch or cavorting on the lawn. That is, don’t plant spring flowering shrubs if you don’t show up until July. I would also consider planting them well enough forward of the path from the steps so that they can extend across the full breadth of the house. I can’t tell if this would be possible to do without cramping the path but it looks as if that would enhance the view of the house. Oh and pick shrubs that are attractive looking down from the porch. I’m imagining hydrangeas which evoke such a carefree joy Just don’t fall for blue macrophyllas ( I see you like blue) lest you be agonizing about getting the buds safely through your winters!
