Are there any other colors already in the room, for example a piece of wall art or other furniture? If so, choose a color from that and repeat it in the rug. That's going to need to be a very large rug, so you may be better off choosing a piece of patterned broadloom and having it bound.

I wouldn't get a bland neutral. Choose something with some pattern and real color, then repeat the color in pillows, throws, wall art, wall color etc. Blue would look good with your brown sofa, but a stronger blue, not a pastel. Add some texture in the pillows, e.g. something velvety/fuzzy/furry. No more smooth surfaces like your leather sofa.

Draperies will also help soften the overall look.

I would choose something a little larger, so it doesn’t look like an island. Just enough to go under the front legs. Not sure how big the space is, but if it’s too big for a standard area rug size, it’s easy to buy some broadloom, have it cut to the size you need and bind it or serge it (binding is more affordable). Stanton carpets makes some fun patterns that don’t look like a plain broadloom. A local flooring specialist can usually help you and find someone to bind it. Round wouldn’t be right there. Get some throw pillows that pick up colors in the rug, and maybe some soft throws to soften the look of all that dark leather. No room for end tables, so maybe some floor lamps to help with the cozy factor. I assume the couch reclines? Not sure if a coffee table would work in that scenario.

A rug won't solve the problem all by itself. Since the couch was "free," consider reconfiguring it with fewer pieces. You would have a much airier space if you eliminate a whole side of the sofa so that the dining area can connect--either two facing sofas or sectional plus a chair or two would making the room much more inviting. Pease take a photo of the opposite wall? You haven't given us enough visual information. Is TV watching going to be part of the room?

Here are some general principles when dealing with oversized, heavy, dark pieces

--As Partim said, add pattern and color to curtains, rugs, wall paint, pillows, and accent pieces like coffee table and side chairs.

--Contrast the finish of the main pieces, i.e. the massive leather couch, with different materials that have a smidge of the color--black/brown--but it 90% some other color and/or pattern. Can't tell if the couch is brown or black.

--Add art to pull the eye away from the sofa. The art could be in the dining room.

--Add ambient lighting--floor and table lamps--to bring light into the room. Get modern, industrial looking spindly lamps. (I know you're looking for a farmouse/lakehouse vibe, but the couch isn't either of those things. Sorry, but it's a bit fraternity house, a bit rec room, which is why I suggest breaking it up into two sofas, or one sectional, not a wall-to-wall barrier to the rest of your house.)

--Coffee tables, consoles, side tables, etc. need to be open and airy. That doesn't mean delicate but up on legs. Since the couch is leather rustic wood pieces will work but with open legs. Curtains should be nubby with maybe some bamboo roman shades. Or just the roman shades. See photos below.

--You'll have a more inviting, flexible space if you rehome half of that couch and add a couple side chairs. Otherwise, you'll have guests lined up along that walls with vast space in between--not cozy. And getting to the dining room easily looks almost impossible. The couch blocks the flow of the space.

If you click on my name, then look for that Ideabook, you can see how pattern and colors are used in different rooms. Some of the rooms just have simple shades to let in maximum light.

Again, a rug won't fix the problem of having a massive sofa dictating the feeling of the room. Try splitting it up if that can be done. Many of us would like to see how that looks, so come back with more photos, particularly the wall that isn't shown.

Get rid of that couch please!

I think the previous home owners passed on a curse to you! They were probably laughing as they drove away! Is there a space for hubs to have a man cave or theater room? That's what this monster is designed for. Try Craig's List.

Can the corner pieces be removed so you'd have one couch and two love seats? That would allow better access.

Hubby adores the damn couch and despite the monstrosity that it is , it has proven to be useful when entertaining and having friends over. We are not at all high-brow folk, so it fits our easy going casual life. I am waiting on pillows, curtains and artwork until I can secure a decent rug as I feel that is what I will need to build off of. I am wanting blues for sure to be brought into the equation. I will update as soon as I get rug that I am considering...wish me luck!

i'm assuming you're doing a large coffee table or ottoman? do not get something small or else it will be dwarfed by the sofa. something along these large, square pieces might work

There are 2 ceiling fans with lights above the area... and in front of the couch is a stone fireplace with natural wood mantel and tv mounted above. I will try and upload pictures

What a fun place! This is one of those common issues that can easily be solved! A slick dark sofa and slick dark flooring NEEDS lighter toned companions with COLOR, TEXTURE, and PATTERN. These are the magic that makes an inviting space. So, I would start with a large jute/sisal rug in natural which will give you some texture and contrast, add pillows and throws in multi color weaves that offer pattern, texture and color. My area of the planet is big on big sofas, leather and dark (dang it!) so, I have lots of experience in righting the ship. I would go on, but will wait for your response.

Your instinct is correct that you need color, and lots of it. You're working on a large scale with that sofa - it's 3X or 4X the usual sofa size. Smaller decor items such as throw pillows won't be big enough to color balance the large amount of dark brown/black - you need to scale up everything. LOL you're in Texas, everything is bigger!

I'd go with a colorful patterned rug like the one you posted above. If anything, even brighter and more patterned if you find another one you like. Have you considered a southwestern style rug? I saw one on another Houzz post the other day and thought it was gorgeous. So colorful, and suitable for your Texas location.

Since hubby loves the monstrosity, play up its hugeness. Buy a very large rug: it must fill the entire center of the
giant |__| and extend under all three sides so the front half of each section sits on the rug.
“Partim” is right that the antidote for that much darkness is COLOR. The rug must be big and brightly colorful. Add lighting so the room doesn’t wallow in its own darkness.
A big bright-colored leather ottoman (or two or three) can act as a movable footstool or table to hold trays for snacks or drinks. Just don’t go for the frat house or basement look.
I hope you have another room for adults because if you invite two or four people for dinner, there is no way to have a cozy conversation in the sports arena.

Are the cupholder pieces removable? If so, I'd eliminate all of them. That'll make the big U shape of the sofa sectional smaller. What is the configuration of all the other pieces? Is each piece a standalone piece or are their actual sections? Any recliners?

Are you leaving the wall color? If that is changeable, I'd go with something less cream/beige and more white/linen/warm gray to lighten the space up a bit more.

I like the idea of a light colored sisal rug versus one with lots of color and pattern, but I'm definitely not a pro ;) I'd bring the patterns in on pillows and artwork.

IMO, save your color for accents rather than try to overwhelm the sofa/floor colors. That wonderful big sofa requires a grounding that soothes its presence. Signing off...I know you are going to enjoy your wonderful new home!

Yes, I am defintely changing the wall colors to lighter greige color and eventually the floors when the budget allows. Baby steps with the rug and accents pieces. I do not like the bright multi colors, I like blues and farmhouse look. I have a rug on order and will play with he RUG USA tool if the rug is a no-go. I will post pics updated soon. The monster appears to be one 3-seater, two 2-seaters with cup holders, and two corner units. Seats 9 people but takes up more room than three sofas. Would hubby consider removing the two corner curves and leave some space for traffic at those corners? If the cup holder things come off, remove them.
Maybe if you start hanging some art and window treatments, and get a rug to fit the middle, you may be able to make the room more attractive. The antidote to dark brown is lighter, brighter colors.

If you insist on keeping the couch, I think you’ll have to change your expectations of your living room ever looking lake or farmhouse style. Find some other inspiration that will work. This piece is too big to disguise.

And you are keeping the couch because... ...you are giving parties all the time and all your living room needs is seating, with lots of places to put the beer, and the only lighting necessary is from the TV? ...the previous owners could not fit the monster couch in their new home and somehow convinced you that leaving it for you was a bonus? ...too much effort now to hire a large moving van to take it to the trash facility that accepts furniture?

I am wondering if there is a place to donate it (or places to donate pieces of it), like a women’s shelter? Then you could furnish your living room with the usual - a sofa, chairs, sofa table/desk, side tables, floor and table lamps, ottomans, bookshelves, planters - and still have lots of room.

Maybe one other block of color whatever you like but would 'match the strength' of the sectional... not too bright you said... not too drab. This might be good and pillows/ throw could go direction you mentioned. Good reviews btw.

I would use a lighter tone rug that has lots of texture - such as sisal or jute. Then, I'dd add color and texture through your pillows/throws; and large, colorful artwork on the walls. I like Beth's ideas for a coffee table.

A rug like this would warm up and lighten the space. I have this rug available at overstock, wayfair and others and it cleans like a dream. This is not my room in the picture.
