What should I do about my overcrowded bedside table?

Hello,

I desperately need help (and shopping links) to make my bedside look less cluttered. I'm using a table that's way too small and want to replace it with something that will keep all my little night things organized (lotion, some books, water, eye mask etc). I also want to replace the lamp. I'm overwhelmed and could use advice on what kind of furniture I should be looking for. Since my apt is a studio, the bed is pretty central and can be seen when guests are over so I want the bedside situation to be better.

Thanks!

and don't forget that there are bedside pockets.
(this one is from Wayfair, but they are all over the place. And they're easy to make.)

I have a similar problem, though my nightstand isn't quite as big as yours.
In my case, I have both a lamp and a light alarm clock. And then I have a little fan.
My nightstand has a pullout shelf that I move the fan to when I want to use it. but it's still crowded. I think I need to move something off. The thing I'm considering now is getting a wall sconce to replace the lamp.

Some wall sconces must be attached to a junction box behind the wall but LOTS of them come with a plug, just like a table lamp, You can cover the cord with a plastic casing from Home Depot and paint it to match the wall.

(my other option is to get more practiced at using the light alarm clock as a night-light--it can be done, but it's fiddly. I don't use the bedside light for reading, just for seeing)

also consider a floor lamp, especially since you're in a studio. It'll look more living-room like. See if you can find one w/ a reading arm, if you read in bed.

You could also get a shoulder-height narrowish open bookcase and put it beside the bed poking out into the room, so the shelves are reachable from the bed. And the shelves that fall below the surface of the bed would be accessible from the other side, the living room.

You can get creative and hang artwork on the end!

also, a nightstand with drawers would let you put some of that stuff inside.

Come to think of it, maybe I should rearrange my nightstand's top drawer to move some of those things inside. I have an eyeglass holder, but I really could put those in the drawer, and ditto the eye drops.
Hmmmmm! Thanks for bringing your problem here--you're giving me lots of things to think about.

On, and here's a headboard w/ storage that isn't as visible from the rest of the room. You could use the top of it for a lamp, or attach a sconce to the front of it.

I think your room would look a lot nicer w/ a headboard of some sort; less blank. Do some googling for images of "headboard with storage" or similar.

this one has side cubbies and front!

Here's a DIY one that you could make using wooden crates from Michaels, or a skinny bookcase, etc..

This would need a cabinetmaker, but it's cool--the headboard pulls out. So you could hide stuff during the day.

if you want to get a nightstand--Wayfair.com is a good source for ideas and maybe even purchase.

Back when I bought mine, I wanted one a little taller than the bed, ad it was actually a bit hard to find; they were all very short! But I did find one eventually. (The Bombay Company isn't around anymore; supposedly it's coming back, but...)

I think your current nightstand is too short, and that's part of the problem.

    $39 Ikea nightstand

My son got a nice little nightstand from Ikea, with a shelf and a drawer. It's not much bigger than yours, but with a shelf for the books and a drawer for everything else, it would eliminate the clutter.

I like the pullout shelf idea on a nightstand. Here are a few ideas. Have you thought about nesting tables which you can move around when needed. Do you like mercury glass?
