There IS a reason. It's because I have discovered through my research, and from your comment, that wool is the best fiber for carpet! It lasts and cleans well and lays well and feels good and soft, and is beautiful, right? We're building, and as I am sure is the case for everyone, I want to use the best materials that I can, but I've gone way over budget on many other things, so I was hoping to find a deal on carpeting...

I agree with partim. Wool is lovely but it's not as easy to clean. Have you ever washed a sheep? :)

I like hardwood plus hand knotted wool area rugs that can be *washed*. No laid carpeting is every going to be really clean. It's impossible to completely remove dirt and soap residue, which attract more residue.

bigadventuregirl - If you do find a wool at a "discounted" price make sure you do your homework on the product and the manufacturer. Discounted prices on wool are red flags to me.

Your next best fiber will be nylon. Nylon has memory and will handle high traffic very well.

Have you looked at any brands of carpet? One I will highly recommend is Dreamweaver. They are a newer company but they were created by Mr Shaw who created Shaw Floors (Shaw Industries). He's a very smart man and he knows carpet.
Dreamweaver, my opinion, has the best stain protection on the market for carpet. You can use hot water to clean your carpet and remove stains...no need to buy carpet stain cleaner. All carpet companies manufacture their carpet, roll them out and add a spray foam stain protector which dissolves into the carpet. Dreamweaver adds a stain protection during the manufacturing of their fibers prior to the carpet being manufactured. Once they have manufactured the carpet, they too add an additional spray foam stain protection that dissolves into the carpet. It's basically 2x the protection and the stain protection in the fibers are superior to all others on the market. Red wine spill? No problem with Dreamweaver carpets, hot water will remove it.

Thank you all for responding. This is all very good information. I did go today for the first time to look at carpeting in person. The lady helping me did show me the Dreamweaver brand and gave me the back story. It's nice to have confirmation of this from you, Cinar Interiors. I will definitely be considering this brand!

I would suggest hardwood and rugs instead of wool carpet. Reason: carpet beetles. The darn things fly in during the warm months, and a wool carpet will give you an infestation in no time.
