I guess the best flow would be to have the bed under the big east window. Or were you picturing the bed on the opposite wall?

And you have a tall boy and two dressers to find homes for too?

I think the first step would be to draw a layout of the room with dimensions and figure out furniture placement.

My original post was already so long so I didn't add details! My fave colours are green (specifically olive) but that's not good for walls for me, dove grey, navy blue. pretty much there are shades of every colour family that I love and can live with.

Our winter duvet cover is a corduroy block quilt made by yours truly. Colours are navy, red. sage, brown, and tan alternated with creamy white. Our summer cover was a golden yellow matellasse but that got worn through this summer so for summer we are wide open too. There isn't any other upholstery or bedding to consider.

I'm not afraid of anything stylistically except for monochromatic beige on beige, and I prefer vintage and antique to brand new. Boho suits me fine but I find it a bit stimulating for a bedroom :)

I'm signing off for the night, that hardworking Husband needs some attention today too!

Hi Molly, thanks for the picture! It is a little more modern than what we can do I think, but I love the pink and the style of the bed!

@Amoeba the bed will be on the wall across from the big window. I like the view of the big chestnut tree and I think I'll really enjoy it from my bed. More importantly, we have baseboard heat and the radiators are on the window wall so I want to leave that wall more open.

I have a rough idea of where all the furniture will go. We will have the bed (new) and two nightstands, the dresser and tallboy and mirror dresser (pics coming). That should be sufficient for our clothing needs.

The mirror dresser will go to the left of the big window. It will be directly in front of the door so it will make a pretty focal point since the bed won't be visible from the door. The tallboy will go on the right side of the window with a tv mounted on an arm above it. The long dresser will go in the entry nook, across from the ensuite door. That area used to be where the reach-in closets were. I liked the closet location and they seemed convenient but I hated walking into the room because it was so confined, only about 2 1/2 feet wide. It felt so dark and claustrophobic. That whole area now is probably about 5x8'. So since we had to gut the whole house anyway I decided to relocate the closet to the interior of the room.

Let's see your furniture Lindsey. I'm looking forward to your anti-transitional choices. Would you consider a simple, not-modern wallpaper in a pale olive? I think it would be nice with the furniture you describe, and more homey than paint. For floors I'd just carpet until you decide to do the whole house.

Wallpaper would be an option I think. Or paint for now to get the contents of my bedroom out of the living room before Christmas with a plan to add wallpaper later.

The budget is fairly open. I don't have a specific amount in mind, but we can afford to buy anything we *need* which isn't much. A new mattress set and bed frame will take probably half the budget at least, and flooring will be another big chunk. Paint is fairly minimal as far as expense goes and we will do all the work ourselves. Other than that we will use what we already own for now.

The immediate goal is to get my bedroom out of the living room.

It looks like carpet will be the floor of choice. I prefer a mid-tone neutral (farm dirt is a very real and persistent part of our lives) and that will probably be grey since the tile in the adjacent hallway is grey. I would love to do hardwood right now, however the time constraint makes that impossible. Husband does prefer laminate for the short-term but I know the truth: we will not be moving everything out again once it's all in there. Not within the next decade anyway! LOL. I'm also toying with the idea of painting the subfloor for now. I have lived with this option before so I know I can stand it and actually it does suit my philosophy more than any other temporary measure; I'm very much against put-in-tear-out renovating. And when we do go to hardwood, that can be installed right over it (the sub is brand new).

The more I think about it, the more I am leaning toward a country-farmhouse look. Not the Modern Farmhouse Joanna Gaines style. I find that just a tad kitschy for me. I love handmade quilts, wood furniture (painted or not), wrought iron, sheepskin rugs (I own these already), mixed colours and patterns...

I'll try to find some inspiration photos too. I have a Master bedroom ideabook started but it was geared toward a wrought iron bed that we were going to buy second hand. Not committed to that anymore. All those photos are so WHITE. Which I love the serenity of for a bedroom...but hate the upkeep. Again, farm dirt. I'm not the type of Wife who will say "you have to change your clothes and shower before your nap" so my reality is, no white.

A good color would be dark drapes like taupe,black,navy, emerald green, burgundy.

Lindsey would you consider refinishing your Eastlake style dresser (the mirrored one)? It could be gorgeous, especially as an entry hall table (near a front door). Does it have to go in the bedroom?

Hi mrykbee, yes the dresser does have to go in the bedroom. We need and like it for clothing storage, but on top of that we have a very busy household of young kids. It's already gotten quite beat up from being in the living room for the past 2.5 years and it is just sitting in the furthest corner of the room; I can't imagine what would happen to it in an entryway with 7+ kids running past it 100 times a day! Originally I had planned to use it in the entry but now I realize that is just not practical for us. One day I will get it returned to its former glory. That project is far down on the list for now though!

We have decided to put the room on hold until after Christmas. I know my Husband was really hoping to get it done but I don't want him to stress about it. It's not as important to me as having a relaxing holiday season is.

So I'm still gathering ideas and suggestions if anyone has anything else to throw out here :)

Do you already have your quilt? That would be a good clue on the direction of things.

I have that quilt. I would remove the red pillows & the curtains. Add purple or yellow or pink.

Oh I'm surprised. I thought you said no white or light on the bed as hubby lays down in his farm clothes.

ugh, finally got to my computer. I can post photos from my phone but not make comments. The pic I posted is an inspiration of the wall colour I'm thinking and the overall "feel" that I want to accomplish. But you're right, no white lol! And no sleigh bed; Husband is over 6' and has never been able to sleep in them. But I do like the darker wood.

Our quilt is a simple corduroy block quilt with forest green, sage, dark brown, and tan blocks alternating with creamy white blocks. It has a border of alternating red and navy blue. Very rustic-country :) We are likely to have any variety of hand made quilts and vintage bedspreads at any point in time. For example, our summer cover used to be a mustard yellow matelasse spread (it finally wore through this year).

I really enjoyed our last bedroom which had almost the exact same orientation and was painted grey. This is a very balanced grey so should go nicely with all our Stuff. And I will use the lighter shade Passive in our ensuite. Grey has always been my preferred colour for bathrooms because it makes me look so pretty lol.

I thought of doing sage green until I remembered that a lot of the art for our room has various green shades in them. I think putting them on green walls would cause the art to just blend in too much.

Next step is hunting for light fixtures!

This bedroom set is on the local craigslist. $1000 for the bed, tall dresser, long dresser, and nightstand. We don't technically need all the dressers but can always pass them on to the kids. It is much more modern than I was thinking but I think without the dressers the modernness won't be as pronounced. And the headboard looks very comfy to lean on and read or watch movies.

Nightstands don't have to match. A small round table or small other kind.

I'd say take it only if you are going to pass your old dressers on to your kids. You're getting to hodgepodge land.

I also wonder if the orange tone of it will look good with gray.

That said, it's a nice set. Is the gray set in stone?

This is the winter quilt we use. We have to replace our summer quilt, and we actually change bedding fairly often as we find cool vintage covers that we like :) So in a way the bedding choice is irrelevant, making a neutral like grey or sage green a good choice.

Grey isn't set in stone, but I'm strongly leaning that way. I am open to suggestions but I want to buy the paint today :-D The grey I landed in is very balanced RGB so I'm confident it will go with everything. Grey has always been one of my favourite colours (Dove grey is in my top 5 Crayolas lol) so I'm not at all concerned that I'll grow out of it or get tired of it. Sage green would be beautiful, but again so much of my decor and Stuff (books, art, ceramics, knick knacks though we don't have many) is green. I think it will all pop a little better against a different colour background. Again though, I'm open to being proven wrong if anyone has some great images to share!

I haven't seen the bed I'm considering in real life,so I can't say as to the colour. To be honest my Husband doesn't love it. Doesn't hate it either though. We already have one nightstand so would only need one more. I wouldn't use the dressers in my room because they force the set too modern; the headboard on its own is a simple style that will look fine with a farmhouse vibe, I think, especially with lots of pillows hiding most of it :) The main appeal for me is the quality. I would rather pay a medium amount of money for a style I can tolerate than pay anything at all for something new and junky no matter what style it is. In other words I can live with high quality of any style more easily than I can live with my favourite style in garbage.

I'll add a pic of my favourite little vignette that is just outside the door to my room. It will have to be in the next comment; I can know add photos to this thread from my phone, but not type any words. grrr.

I'm pleased with the colour, it varies from an almost-bright yellow to a soft cream to almost buff-beige. It will be a good backdrop for all our Stuff I think.

Hi everyone! Some progress has been made :)

While shopping for the mattress we found a deal we couldn't pass up (of course lol). You might remember that we needed a headboard; this one was on sale for $899. Solid pine, no veneer, made just down the road from us. Woo!

The deal part was, five more pieces (dresser w/mirror, tall boy, and two nightstands) was only $1399. So even though we didn't plan to get new dressers, it was too good of a deal to pass up. I'll post photos of everything once it is in place, hardware on, etc.

So my next question is the throw pillows. I found these today, I love the mustard colour but I'm not sure with the yellow walls. The pillows can be returned. I would have to get one more set of two of the darker colour for the back, as two aren't enough. What do you all think?

Not loving the square yellow pillows with the quilts you are using. I think the pillows look fine with the walls and headboard--it's the quilts that are the problem in the ensemble. So many plain squares already, and you're adding plain square pillows, and there are squarish cut panels on the headboard behind it all. Consider something round, rectangle, etc.

I love Molly's suggestion of the wedding ring quilt. I also love the white textured bedspread in the inspiration photo. It makes me think you should also consider a chenille bedspread--it fits with the vintagy theme, is soft and comfy too, and low maintenance. You can find one on clearance for $50 if you keep your eyes open.

Is that the door opening right on the bed like that? I'm confused. This room is too big for that to have to happen. Where is the furniture going (room plan)? Do you have some comfy chairs? These quilts can be thrown over those too.

I love the idea of a chenille bedspread. The wedding ring quilt is gorgeous, one of my favourite patterns. I always have an eye out for pretty possibilities :)

That's not the entrance door in the last photo; it's the closet door. It opens all the way without hitting the bed. We could move the bed to the other wall, with the big window, but I like looking out the window when I'm in bed in the morning. Sadly it's the only window with a good view. Gotta work on landscaping soon, if winter ever ends!

Oh and thanks for the pillow suggestion myrkbee. I think you're right. I hadn't thought of the shape being a challenge but it totally is. Good call.
