Our kitchen renovation is done - before after

First off I'd like to thank everyone for their help with the questions I posted on here. This project began in January of this year. In the fall of 2017 our sink started leaking and the plumber suggested we replace it which would have most likely meant replacing our counters. Well the kitchen was 43 years old with laminate cabinets that the previous owners had painted white. We had lived with it for 12 years and decided it was time to go. I wasn't trying to create a high end kitchen as it wouldn't fit in with our house or the neighborhood. Our plan is to live in this house another 6-8 years. Here's what I came up with, something better than before, but not breaking the bank. We removed a half wall and part of a wall that stuck out between the cooking and eat in area. The layout remained the same and we added an island.

    Very nice!

Don't the higher cabinets (without the soffit) make the room seem SOO much taller? Well done.

It looks great! An awesome upgrade with smart selections. Love the backsplash you went with, and I think the pulls you chose are so much nicer than a standard Euro pull.

Yes having taller cabinets really opened up the space!! The kitchen feels so much bigger even with the island.

I was very nervous about adding the island, but it has been great and somehow makes the space feel bigger.

Really well done! Loving how you redid the closet area, and snuck in more storage next to what is probably a stairway door! Pretty!!

I love it all, but the counters are my favorite. Wow, stunning!

It‘s a little hard to see your sink in the pics, but it looks large. Can you please provide the brand and size?

MMiller - I purchased the sink from Costco (link below).. I bought it when it was $80 off, right now it's $60 off. If you're not in a hurry maybe watch it for a better sale. Here's a better pic of the sink.

That is a wonderful transformation! I also like your crown moldings and how clean and sleek they are. So often we see heavy thick elaborate crown moldings that really only a very large kitchen with high ceilings can support. You really have a great eye.

Are those counters Alaska White granite? They are beautiful.

@Shannon_w Thanks! The KD had originally picked out much thicker molding and shorter cabinets. I told her to change it and give me the taller cabinets and the slimmest molding. The granite yard where we purchased the granite had it labelled as Khyber, but I think it's the same as Alaska White.

@Helenaoo thank you! That's part of the wall we removed. I decided to leave the bottom half. For a while I had second thoughts, but I'm really happy with it now that the counter is installed. I use that extra space more than I thought I would!

@luckyblueeye the double oven is great!! It was so handy during Thanksgiving this year (we had our Thanksgiving a week late due to the renovation). No more worrying about shuffling dishes around to get everything cooked.

Well done! I just had to smile at your before....had the “lovely” half wall spindle thing going on too!

My husband’s desire to keep his beloved spindled cutouts stalled a kitchen remodel for years...no way were they going to stay! I saved a spindle and regifted it to him for Christmas last year.

@rantontoo Funny! My husband was so attached to them as well. 12 long years I had to look at them and they were in so many of our photos. I love that you gifted him one. I wish I had thought to save one. My neighbor's husband is also resistant to getting rid of their spindles, I'm going to pass on the Christmas gift idea to her.

This is wonderful! You must be so thrilled. Would you mind providing info about your kitchen, i.e. size, and especially materials used? That would be extremely helpful. Kind of like this format (scroll down a bit in the OP post)

Nosoccermom - Sure, here are some details

The main area where the cabinets/appliances are is approximately 12.5 feet wide x 9 feet long

The eat in/pantry area was an additional 12.5 feet x 7.5 feet. It's a little bigger now since we took the wall out. So maybe 12.5 feet wide by 11 feet long.

Ceiling Lighting - Contractor provided LED recessed lights on dimmers and we used Bright White 3000K bulbs. New dimmer switches were installed with lights over the island separate from the rest of the lights.

Under cabinet lighting - Contractor provided LED strip lights that are linked together and on a dimmer switch.

We kept our microwave (GE) and Fridge (GE Profile)

    Hope this helps!

Thank you! This is so helpful.

I'm especially interested in the island because my kitchen space is similar. Could you provide approximate measurements, i..e size of island and how much space you have for the aisles? And above all: Do you find it useful? Anything you'd change?

    TIA!

nosoccermom The island is 48 inches by 24 inches at the base. The counter top is slightly bigger than that by an inch or so on each side. I am really happy with the island, it was the one thing I was concerned about. I worried it would make the kitchen feel cramped, but there is enough room around it, that it's not an issue. The aisles are about 39 inches wide on the two sides and it's plenty of space. I love having the pots and pans drawers, utensil/silverware drawers and trash/recycling in the island. It's been a game changer.

We did Thanksgiving dinner with my mom, husband and I all cooking in there with no issues. One thing I may have changed was putting in a hood and moving the microwave into the cabinet next to the fridge. However, even that I'm not sure if I would have done because I really do need all of the cabinet space.
