You can use other things besides contact paper. Did see a thread here discussing this at some point. Try a search?

Roll of perforated rubber shelf liner. Cheap, washable, works well.

I don't like the idea of contact paper cause if something does spill and you want to remove the contact paper- the cabinet or drawer will be sticky and leave a mark. they have rubber liners which work nicely and at easily replaced when they get ruined. or you can put disposable plastic liners. ( they are like placemats) or you can laminate a custom size paper and put it on top of the shelf liners so they don't slide.

I also like rubber shelf liner. I have also used wallpaper -- wallpaper stores sell their "leftover rolls" for a couple dollars, making them the cheapest possible option.

I measured carefully and bought small plastic storage containers to fill the space. If anything spills, the little containers will catch it. Also helps to keep things divided, not jumbled together. I did the same thing in the cabinets under the sinks. Those are bigger.

I use vinyl coated wallpaper that I find at rummage sales for cheap.
