'The Dark Lady'

On its own roots, it's never grown really well here ... but it's getting more water now, and starting to bloom a lot for the amount of plant there is. And you sure can't fault the blooms . . .

I saw one bloom last evening, when we walked the dogs, and went back to pick it. I found four more opening, too! So, though the stems are thin and week, what a bouquet.

OH, and fragrant as all getout. Even I can smell it.

they make. And fragrant, too!

What a beautiful rose and gorgeous vignette, but I'm fascinated by the picture of the mission? that's visible in the background.

Vaporvac, that's Mission Santa, founded in Santa Barbara, CA in 1786. I don't really have a picture of the Mission on my wall. It's a picture of our late Afghan Hound, Webster, sitting in the A.C. Postel Rose Garden, across from the Mission.

I think we went up to S.B. to do that photo the day before we clipped down his coat, following his retirement from the show ring.

Gorgeous blooms and gorgeous dog! Looking at that luxurious but do doubt labor-intensive coat, I wonder whether you chose Dalmatians out of sheer exhaustion as your future dogs. Never mind, yours have longer coats, don't they?

Yes. Ours have longer coats -- but even so, they don't match the hours of grooming required to maintain a Best In Show Afghan Hound. And anyhow, most of my Dals have been "normal."

When we met, Clay had Afghan Hounds. I had Dalmatians. (I think he was drawn to me because I knew how to groom.) He said that it was not lost on him that Dalmatians could be shown without four hours of grooming.
