We used a luxury vinyl flooring that looks very much like hardwood. It is not cold and it is supposed to be virtually impervious to water damage. When our builder suggested it, we had visions of cheap, fake looking flooring. But this looks great and we are very pleased that we chose it.

This is the LVPF we just installed in our basement. Got it at Lowe's. Reasonably priced and easy to install.

The key to any basement floor installation is what's under it. That would mean a crack isolation underlayment for ceramic or stone tiles; XPS and ply or dimple type plastic such as DMX for hardwood, engineered and laminate. As for carpet directly on concrete, only a glue-applied low-pile synthetic; otherwise you will smell the mould in a year.
