Redecorating a very themed room!

We're redecorating a home we bought prior to moving in. This house has a ton of bedrooms, and the floor plan doesn't dictate which kid will go where. We have this one bedroom (shown) that's very put together in a surfer/beach hut theme, but we don't have any surfer boys or girls in our group.

So we're working with the cubby-style beds (likely the room will only have one kid in it, but an extra bed is great for sleepovers!) and the shape of the room. What would you do? Has anyone seen anything especially inspired done with these cubby beds?

Side note: our kids are young, but they grow so fast. I don't want to go too "young" with any over the top themes, because I'd rather not start this whole thing again in 3 years when my little boy isn't into trains anymore. That being said, I'm not opposed to adding accessories to bring in a theme (they're into horses, space, tractors, trains, flowers/nature, fairies...)

*Note the carpet is coming out of the bathroom, and the new carpet in all bedrooms is a light textured neutral - no more brown*

No real advice. I think I'd start teaching the young train aficianado about surfing. Did you know they call surfboards the trains of the sea? (yeah,I made that up)

Edited to add: I have never seen any of these cubby beds look particularly remarkable. I have seen better and worse examples, from children's rooms to luxury ski chalets to disciplined barracks. What is remarkable is how space saving they can be for those who need that function.

oh my. you weren't kidding when you said VERY themed.

those arches are very pretty and make me think of old world houses/cottages. so maybe get rid of the grass covers and bamboo and paint the walls a textured creamy color? you could replace the bamboo picture rail with wood to match the baseboards and cabinets, and paint the inside of the bed nooks a darker coordinating color, maybe.

the neutrals would more easily allow for changing accessories/themes as the kids grow up.

if/when your kids are old enough, you could even add some light weight door panels to the bed arches, to make them look more like the cubby beds that are in many very old cottages. they tended to close up fully so that during the day, they just looked like a cupboard from the outside, afterall.

    good luck with it!

Tiki bar? Luau? Actually I'd strip the themey stuff out--lose the grass (as much fun as vacuuming it would be) and the bamboo trim, use some nice normal paint, and have a still-pretty-cool but unthemed room.

By the way, my kid has those sheets. He has requested plain ones. :)

yoboseiyo and Fori thank you for your ideas! I'm definitely going to strip the theme that's there and paint it out - likely a darker shade of the wall color inside the cubbies. I hadn't thought to replace the bamboo trim with wood to match the baseboards - I was just going to take it down. But I like that idea.

The theme is much more Tiki bar than it is surfer boy, isn't it? There's a restaurant nearby called "beach hut deli" and it's pretty much a dead ringer, too. Ha!

You could go Swiss Family Robinson with it, and then easily transition to tiki bar once the kids are 21.

Agree with comments above to remove the surf motif and go more neutral. Would consider adding curtains to the cubbies, though... for privacy (and for the “feel” of a train berth while you son is still into trains!)

Not sure if you're aware but these pics are real estate listing pics. I wouldn't feel safe using those on an open forum like this.

I had the same thought train berths would be a natural but since you want something with longevity why do you need a heavy theme at all. The cubby beds are an architectural detail all on their own and maybe can just BE. I am curious about the space saving comment. Yours seem to be taking a lot of space in the room. It sounds like your new home has plenty of square footage so maybe "play space" isn't needed? As your child gets older and may have sleep overs a day bed with a trundle would give him room for a desk or sitting area if you lose the second cubby. Some things to really think about.

The second cubby could be fitted with shelves. Everybody needs a bookcase.

Blue and orange rooms are nice for boys rooms and I feel they are colours that have a lot of longevity. Here are a couple of examples. This first one has the theme from the accessories, and I could see this working with many themes, or no theme at all.

This other one has a space theme with crate and barrel bedding. One idea I have would be to decorate the inside of the cubbies the planet and stars. It could be done by decals/wallpaper or painted on. What little kid wouldn’t love staring up at the stars.

Take down the wood and paint all the walls a neutral color for a start.

"Hey kids, instead of being Ms Cool Mom and using this surfer theme stuff as a jumping off point for making your room into the Temple of Doom and the envy of all your friends, I'm going to take the advice of no-fun people on the internet and tear everything out and paint it beige."

Come ON you guys! Neutrals?? OP's kids should have some fun with this absurd room and make it awesome. I'm still bitter that my parents never let me pick the paint color for my own room.

I would kill for those cubby beds! Such a neat feature.

Leave the décor as it is and teach those kids how to make a Mai Thai. You've got a real Trader Vic vibe going there; run with it and teach them a trade while they're young.

I am looking at the over all shape of this "room". It appears to be just a hall way? The bathroom has no door, very "school" like with a turned entrance...what would the dimensions of this space look like from above? The lack of furniture leaves a lot of room as I re-look at it.

You say you have a ton of bedrooms. Do you really need to use this one right now? If not, then assign a bedroom for each child, and leave this one for the time being. It could be a fun playroom for them. (BTW, I have the same surfer sheets at my beach house too!)

Cute room, but my main thought is that would be a pain in the butt to make those beds. :-)

This is the bunk room at my mother in laws beach house. This pic is probably 10 years old. But I still like the design.

I agree with the folks suggesting some fun for the room. My kids will grow of course, but for now they're still little, and little calls for fun and magic! That being said, the current theme is waaaay too much for me, and it doesn't relate to any of my kiddos' interests.

I love the idea of train berths, and the space idea could be done in a way that grows well with the kids. Some kind of galaxy mural or decals inside the cubby with some coordinating - but not crazy - color on the walls in the rest of the room sounds awesome to me!

@tatts the room is about 20ftX15ft, with that little cut out area at the foot of one bed being an additional 6X6ft space.

"It doesn't relate to any of my kiddos' interests." Kids have such great imaginations it probably wouldn't matter to them, and could spark some new ideas. You could leave it as is, and give them some packing boxes to play with and their imaginations could run wild!
