Malabar spinach question

Last year I grew Malabar spinach in an earthbox on a trellis. It grew slowly but managed to cover the 6' trellis and to flower and set seed. However, the leaves were very small and I didn't get any to eat. I thought it might be because it received only morning sun, but I wonder. Perhaps it was lack of heat, and June was cool, but then we were up in the 80's for months. I gave seedlings to a friend who grew them in her greenhouse where they flourished.....

If the problem could be due to lack of nutrients, I could try again next year, but if it's lack of sun or heat, I will have to grow something else in that spot.
