Is this box blight?

#boxblight ? 3 of my #buxus look like this.... I fear it’s the dreaded #boxwoodblight ? Can anyone confirm? And if so, advise what to do next? I read you shouldn’t cut diseased buxus in a wet season? But surely you shouldn’t just leave it till summer? So many contradictions upon my research from one piece of advise to the next. Genuinely upset if it is blight, as I have 18 buxus in the garden.

I'll Embo's suggestion and add that you should consider boxwood nematodes if you live in an area where they are a problem. Looks just like that.

Hi Darren I have lots of buxus in my garden. Yours do look like blight to me. I had a couple that developed blight two years ago,, and since they were so small at that time, i simply got rid of them and replanted two new ones. Blight is caused by at least two types of fungus, so there is a chance that it will spread. If only a few leaves are affected, it may be fine to just cut them out. But if a big part of the plant is affected, it may be much safer to remove it.

Do you have membership with the RHS? If you do, they have a plant inquiry number you can call for advice. I just went to their website and saw that they listed the numbers you can call. Maybe they will ask you to send photos. I don’t live in the UK so I never use their service, but it seems like they may be a reliable source for advice.

Such a shame and I can understand your disappointment... and to remove those 3 would destroy your circle, but I would have to remove them and then consider what to do...

I know it's expensive to change things, but if you ever want an alternative that's trouble free, do consider Rhododendron 'Bloombux'... I gave up Box ages ago and it's the modern alternative as you can do everything with it as you would with Box, but without the hassle... swarms with bees in June too..

I got mine from here as small plants, they quickly grow..

Thanks everyone for your help. I removed and burnt the 3 infected plants and have fingers crossed the others don’t get it too.

I have been researching for an alternative to buxus and have fallen in love with Rhododendron Bloombux INKARHO. Marlorena, you have introduced such a beauty to me, thank you. How many inches apart do you plant to form a low growing hedge? Any idea?

Thanks again to you all all for giving me your feedback and suggestions.

    Happy New Year!

I'm glad you like it Darren, something to think about in the future maybe...

I think a foot apart would be ok... I've got 3 quite close together 9 ins apart, and they've moulded into one... I might shape it next summer but I'm not artistic... they can be used as topiary.... trouble free fun plants that always look good.. foliage is pristine..

Happy New Year to you too !!...

WoW! I wish this were available stateside. This is exactly what I need as I don't like the smell of buxus and privat is so invasive.
