Sorry, basket was made in Gallup, New Mexico.

Unless it has been kept in the dark most baskets of this type the dark areas dye should have started turning to brown.

You may want to contact the Gallup chamber of commerce to see if they know if any archives of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial are kept and by whom.

I just checked and the group is raising money for a centennial celebration in 2021 so by pass the chamber and go directly to the group.

That ribbon means it was sold/presented/etc. at that event but it doesn't mean it was made in Gallup.

This is probably Navajo, Hopi or Zuni since Gallup is actually within Navajo country and is near the Hopi and Zuni reservations. Here's a map.

I beiieve you're right! A Google image search of 'papago indian baskets' finds a much higher percentage of similar looking baskets than the tribes I posted (which were just the closest to Gallup). Papago are from Southern Arizona, which I am much less familar with than NM.

Thank you, everyone, for your comments and expertise. This is indeed a Papago basket made in 1949 by a tribe member that was awarded $20.00. That's all the information I could gather from the group. Neat!

That is an impressive award for 2nd place in 1949! Based on inflation, it would be the equivalent of more than $200 today. Very nice.
