How to age wood for rustic look

I found corbels that are very similar to the RH Aris Corbels however the wood is not aged or stained.

What can I do to the wood (maple) to give them an aged look?

Don't purchase maple corbels if you want it to appear like these. Maple grain is too hard and won't take the stain or antiquing well. Find them in poplar or pine.

Distressing is don'e often before staining, so beat the corbels up with chains, files, saws etc This finish above will involve a few coats of artistic staining.

BeverlyFLADeziner - if I decide to do this type of finish should i buy poplar or pine as well? what about rubberwood?

Leave them outside in the sun and rain for a few years, I guess. Less work and a more authentic result. Downside is that you have to wait a few years.

no maple. too hard to get dark. you may be able to replicate the RH one by General Finishes milk paint and glaze. go to their website for the how-to's.

the darker one looks like a dark walnut, Java or spiced walnut.

Can't believe I didn't think of this before - have you thought about checking out an architectural salvage place for old corbels? I've seen them around - they are gorgeously carved and excellently crusty.
