I have a similar issue and can’t tell if it’s the same thing. We just unwrapped our Smokey hills cabinets from omega and I see splotchiness. I would have had no idea if not for finding your post that this was even a thing!! I called the cabinet maker and they were like “oh yeah, there was this issue, let me send you the memo and you can talk to the Omega rep about it further”. How does no one notify me of it ahead of time?!

We are about to install the cabinets Monday and I’m wondering if we need to put the project on hold til they (Omega) resolve the issue. I’m not going to accept the orange oil if at all possible - not something to be done with the item that is half the cost of the kitchen itself!!

Frank I really appreciate your insight! I’m pretty sure my contractor agrees with not installing if we aren’t satisfied with cabinets but of course it’s an issue for them as well since it delays the project, which delays them starting the next one! I’m supposed to get a call from the Omega sales rep soon. I’d really like to know if my lot of cabinets was affected or not; I can see splotches and defects in some pieces and not others and honestly unless I know either way I will always assume they are defective. I hope they can tell me that as a starting point and I’ll also be clear that a temporary orange oil solution does not work for me. Was it really obvious to you as it happened? How many days exposed to air do you think it would take? The cabinets also seem prone to fingerprints due to the finish (Smokey Hills stain). So I plan to wipe them down in an appropriate way and see if anything improves. How long will the new ones take?

We have the dark brown stain and it was really obvious. If it's dark in the garage or wherever they are you can use a flashlight or something to look at time.

They do have a range of dates that were affected by the bad clearcoat, so they should be able to tell you if that's it or not.

So they confirmed we have the same issue. I must not have nice of an Omega rep as you but he is insisting on the orange oil. I was totally stern and firm that it is not acceptable to me and he won’t back down. To be honest I don’t want to delay my kitchen because of this, and thankfully we don’t have any upper cabinets so it really isn’t obvious anywhere except on a few exposed plywood panels, which I will definitely insist on getting new panels for. So I am considering demanding new doors and drawers since it appears to have worked for you, but letting the cabinets still be installed. The rep is coming over tomorrow to use the orange oil himself and I will continue to make my case there. Do you have any other advice or angles I could use? I think I’d be happy with new doors and drawer panels because the other pieces aren’t exposed.

They had promised new doors and drawer fronts at first, then tried to do the orange oil cleaner - it was that reversal from their initial solution that angered us more than anything else. Our contractor says the cleaner works for his other clients with the problem.

Good luck to you on having it resolved. They did revert to their original promise to us after we pushed back, so I have no complaints about the service we are receiving.

Just an update, Omega came through on their original promise and replaced the doors and drawer fronts so all exposed surfaces with the bad finish were replaced. Other than this bump in the road, we had an excellent experience with our contractor and are very happy with the Omega cabinets we had installed.
