Resurfacing a big brick fireplace

Hello! We have been in our house for 12 years and have wanted to update the fireplace to reflect a more modern, less lodge-y style. (Also on the agenda is modernizing the railings around the loft with metal wire rather than those wooden posts.) I'd like to resurface it with a contemporary stone treatment, but I'm wondering whether it's possible to do this by putting a stone veneer over the brick, or the brick would need to be removed to be replaced with stone. We also plan on redoing the hardwood floors at some point when we redo the kitchen, since this is an open plan space, and the living, dining, and kitchen are all open to one another.

Here is a photo of the space as it is now, and some of the inspiration photos I've saved.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!
