Reliable washer/dryer

Hi,

I'll be moving to a new house next month and will need to get a new Washer / Dryer and probably a Refrigerator as well. I hope there will be a few President's Day deals around that time.

I've done a whole lot of research so far and it appears that for Washer / Dryer, a front-loader overall is the most efficient with water / energy and should also clean the best. According to Consumer Reports, LG does really well with front-loading washing machines. Otherwise Maytag also seems to do well. Is there anything I need to be aware of with either brand in terms of reliability? For LG I'd consider the WM3700 or WM3770, and for Maytag I'd consider the MHW5500 (Maytag appears to have just released a newer line of washers/dryers but don't see any reviews of those yet). I'd probably just get a matching electric dryer as those should all be good enough.

Is LG really that reliable in the washer/dryer space? Appears that with all other appliances it's hit or miss with LG, but for washer/dryer they get top reliability ratings with Consumer Reports. Maytag is actually rated one step down compared to LG (Very Good vs. Excellent for LG). Would the LG be a better buy here, or is it better to go American and get the Maytag (or Whirlpool?).

Thanks.

my daughter has an LG front loader that is about 3 years old and the drum in the dryer just cracked

This is apparently not an isolated incident and so far LG is doing nothing .

I have the LG WM3570 front load washer. It is three years old and I have no complaints. Very happy with it so far. I didn’t need a new dryer at the time so we didn’t get the matching dryer.

Consumer Reports reliability ratings carry some weight with me, but not much, because in the last ten years of forty years of uninterrupted subscribing to CR, I have not received a survey from them. Over that time we have bought two cars, washer &dryer, new kitchen appliances, etc. My point is I'm not sure who is getting the surveys in the population of their subscribers.

when I subscribed to CR online , I got the survey. It is long and very time consuming.

My daughter loved her LG set , which replaced a whirlpool duet set, until she had the dryer issue. It sure seems to me that if the seam comes apart on a 3 year old dryer, LG should do something about it.

I'm always interested in following these threads since I have an 11 year old Bosch.

Who knows how much longer it will last.

I received the yearly survey when I subscribed to CR (print) years ago. The instructions limited responses to appliances 5 years old or less ... which IMO unreasonably limits the scope of their reliability ratings. I always fibbed and included data on my appliances older than 5 years. :-)

I subscribe to CR magazine, and get the survey in the mail to me every year. It is quite long, but I try to pay it forward and fill it out.

As to LG, I think that when they work, they are really great. My sister has one and loves it, and she has a family of 5 and does tons of laundry. But should there be a problem, the repeated complaint about LG is that it is very difficult to get replacement parts, and LG pretty much ignores if there is a problem reported by thousands. For example, the washer dial settings words rub off - an almost universal problem with LG washers for about a decade (my sister's LG has that issue as well; she marked the settings with a Sharpie, and re-touches it once and a while). LG has done nothing to fix it, and you'd think it would be an easy fix.
