PLEASE HELP- Is WHITE too bright for Pool Side?

Please help if you know or have seen white pool sundecking (all around pool/ large patio area). It is decision time. I want a contemporary style pool patio. I thought I wanted white porcelain tile(textures and slip resistant, of course!) White is more modern and clean HOWEVER my pool builder and a tile rep I spoke to think it will be WAY too bright and that I should do off white/light beige/very dirty white.. anyone have white pool sundecking that they think is too bright? Many shows that show luxury homes have all white...I don't get it.. Thank you!

I think the white will be great. It is exactly what you desire for your contemporary look. Follow your selection, others may disagree. We all have opinions :) Best wishes!

I had white and I loved the look but hated the maintenance. We had lots of trees and lived near conservation area in Florida so I had to have it power washed at least 2x/year and spot washed often in-between. I would think about how much surrounding landscape will impact the white - ex: how much dust, mildew, etc will you have to clean.

Thank you all for the opinions!!! Really means a lot to me! Ok I think I will go for it! If anyone else has any pics or ideas, send over! Karen, the lovely photo...what material is your white pool sun deck? We were going to go with a textured porcelain because much less maintenance and less staining etc.. do you know what you have and if it is bright white or dirty white? if you feel like it, send video of it to tiffeslan@gmail.com... hard to get good look at material but it looks gorgeous! Thank you!! I will certainly post a photo when done! Tiffany

@Karen Rose That looks more like the color of fresh concrete.

The OP was talking about white porcelain tile. I think your pool builder and tile rep are right. I find white buildings painful (literally) to look a in the summer sun without sunglasses on.

We think white is just gorgeous and not at all too bright but you have to even out the white tiling with colors around the pool. See these photos of two of our projects that include white tiling.

Many of our clients buy them I think they are called ledge loungers. They should be available all over the country. We do not sell them

Hi, I was just googling this exact same thing as others have discouraged me from going with white limestone decking but my gut is telling me to go for it! Do you have pics of your completed project?

Did you go ahead with the white? I am debating whether or not to paint my deck white and I'm asking the same question.

currently have the same dilemma... do you have pictures of your finished product?

Ran across this post. I did my pool decking and patio in travertine, the lightest color they had--not truly white but love it. Coping is Lueters limestone since I live in Texas.

Depending on the weather the travertine will look very white or a soft cream. Love stepping on it barefoot. Feels cool in the Texas heat.

we live in Scottsdale, so the idea of a really cool feeling color is super appealing. Question for you Sonja... I see you have grass by the pavers. this is a debate between my husband and myself. Is the grass difficult to maintain among the pavers? do the clippings get in the pool? do you get mud from the pool? does the grass stain your travertine?

    thanks so much!!

Depending on the amount of shade you have white would be a glare problem - have you considered a travertine ( available in cream or amber ) which is still light but has some natural variation ( organic)

The grass has not been difficult to maintain, the area between pavers is cut with a string trimmer due to elevation changes between some of the paver (does not show up well). Also there is a drip irrigation line underneath the grass between the pavers, the rest of lawn has standard sprinklers. Do get some grass clippings, a sprinkling, into the pool but this is from the blower used to clean up; if it were swept then very little clippings would wind up into the pool. (FYI I have a lawn mowing service who does a great job). The pool cleaner and pool circulation handles the clippings without a problem.

I have not had a problem with mud, but do not have any area in the back garden that has mud. The pool surround is 3ft beyond the coping and has a slight grade away from the pool. I have never had a problem with pool flooding with the torrential rainstorms we sometimes get in Texas.

I believe there is an underground drain around the pool that empties onto the street.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your build.

Thanks for the insight! We chose a travertine, it just happens to be really, really light in color. my husband likes things more modern and uniform and this travertine had the least amount of color variation. We are putting in a 20x32' alumawood shade cover over the sunken kitchen, part of the travertine and slightly over the pool as well as many shade umbrella holes and a very long pergola along the side of the swim lane, so we should be good with shade.

another question... the shade structure will be the "graphite" color alumawood (dark grey) as well as the bar stools. I need to choose a surface (chiseled stack stone or tile) for the front of the diving platform/water feature as well as a material to put on the bar countertop. I plan to get black patio furniture with white pads. Any thoughts on the colors/materials I should look at for these two surfaces?

    Thanks so much!!

I see that your pool color is an aqua color, by my monitor. I think since your husband leans toward modern and clean lines I would go with tile in that graphite color for the front of the diving platform or continue with the pool tile all the way up. I love chiseled stack stone but I I think it would look incongruous unless you have some other area of stack stone. Do not have ideas for the countertop. I used Lueters limestone which is what my pool coping is. I do think it is important not to have too many different materials.

I think travertine is a good choice. You have the making of an absolutely gorgeous pool. Can't wait to see the finished product with all the landscaping done.

Just came across my Original Posting and I'm so sorry I have not posted photos yet- it turned out AMAZING! I absolutely love the white- porcelain- very textured so no slipping around pool, I even used it for my baja shelf and far side pool wall because I did not want to see pool tile from inside my house- rather more of a water fall like feature.

No problems with the grass around the pool with the pavers..I will find pics and get them up to help. Wish there was a setting to notify me when someone posts on this thing. Sorry not to get back to you all! White is great!! You wear sunglasses outside anyway- honestly doesn't feel that different from when it was only grass or out anywhere..not too glaring at all- go for it!

Yes, too bright. I learned from experience

We did it- and LOVE it! I do not think for a second too bright..I mean, you'd wear sunglasses anyway, right? I will post photo soon. It is so gorgeous with the moonlight too. Highly recommend. Just be prepared to hose it off once a week so wet pool feet don't make dirt mark footprints- our gardener jumoed in and does it.

Thank, you, HU for your feedback, post a photo. I hope you still don't have it, if you didn't like it.. Send a pic too if you have. Thank you everyone.

Just found this post ... we're thinking of going the lightest Travertine (Ivory, I think it is called), but the samlpes we've been given look very light, so we are concerned about the glare.

Anyone used the lightest Travertine, and can comment on whether it will be too bright in full sunlight? My wife doesn't wear sunnies either, so that's out the window. LoL

    Thanks in advance!

I have white with some gray tones..I love it.. I don't think too bright but I do wear sunglasses if sunny day anyway..it is gorgeous at night too with the reflection of moonlight and sunset!(mine is porcelain)

Pictures please! About to do white concrete patio around pool to match white pre cast coping. If there’s a white looking porcelain that gives the modern look, I’d love to see a pic in case I should consider that instead.

Over time the white color will fade.

Where are the after pics? I also want a true white to go with my white marble coping. I'm doing spray deck and my pool guys think I'm crazy for wanting white. I wear sunglass outside. Would love to see some more true white pics.

Love our light colored pool pavers.

We went with Shellock Pavers, in the Ivory color, from Artistic Pavers. No issues with glare or being too bright. No issues with fading. Our dogs track in a lot of dirt/mud from the yard and the pavers clean up perfectly. We do have a screen enclosure around the pool/patio so we don't get any plant materials falling on the pavers.

The water color isn't this bright in person, just a soft pale blue.
