Master Mirror Mess Up

I asked my builder to mount my vanity light into the mirror. I had the electrician install the light box lower for this reason. long story short they can't do it. Trim guys framed the mirror. I hate it. I have this huge empty space above the frame. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I did consider mounting the light into the frame (use a thicker board). I still have that dead space above the frame.

Why do you want such a LARGE mirror? Why not just put pictures over it in that space?

Probably because it will look FANTASTIC!

get a mirror guy to cut the hole for your light (and please have them remove that cheesy looking trim)

Or else your set-up is going to look like this

Do you have your mirror? (btw, for a mirror panel that big, check craigslist. people are always remodeling and taking down huge mirrors). Take one you want to the mirror/glass place. Tell them how big you want the mirror and where you want the hole for the light.

Take it back and have your guys install. use care when attaching your light over the mirror so it doesn't crack.

your guys are lazy and don't want to be bothered w/this.

As for the space up above, it's fine. If you don't like it, tile the entire wall, or just paint like they've done here

@ Beth H. That cheesy frame threw me too. Then when I saw the corners weren't mitered I thought maybe he planned on siliconing the mirror to that 1 x. That's what made me think why he was concerned about the mirror breaking with a fixture over it - there'd be a 3/4" unsupported gap.

But yes, the guys suck! Her inspiration photo is very clear.

No. I just don't agree with your opinion. And what's with the all caps and multiple exclamation marks?

Is this a custom build? Demand that they do it! I wanted a large mirror (I actually have beveled edges instead of a frame bc I wanted even MORE mirror) with sconces close to eye level. Our builder didn’t bat an eye. I LOVE it. Don’t listen to him. Show him pictures. Good luck! Your bathroom will be lovely!

Please remove that cheap, poorly installed wood. They don’t know what they are doing. If you don’t have wire and junction boxes installed on sides for sconces (I don’t see any) you won’t be putting sconces in this bathroom. Beth’s input is spot on. I wouldn’t even put large mirror in that space. I would find one you like at Hobby Lobby and hang it over the sink area. This is so silly. Sorry you are being treated this way. So unprofessional.

If the mirror is not cut, contact another mirror company and have them measure and provide a full size 1/4” thick mirror witn a precut vanity light hole. This is quite ok for mirror companies to do. It seems your builder purchased a standard sized mirror and is not able to cut the hole because he does not know how. I’ve just been getting glass and mirror estimates from companies and our master will have a 115”x50” mirror installed above vanity backsplash and will have holes cut for two wide vanity lights with 4 led lights each centered above each of two vanities

@Flo Mangan If you look at her inspiration photo, the OP isn't looking at putting in sconces.

I understand and noted she said she put sconces in her powder room. Just was informing.

    Some rude comments as usual!

The answer to all of this. Invest in a larger mirror. Then mirror mount the light. Dont waste the energy fighting the fact that the contractor WONT do it. Hire a mirror pro and move on. Mirror cutting is a basic skill for those that are in the trade.

Good luck with your mirrors. We had trouble getting coordination between the cabinet guy (who built the frames) and the mirror guys who were installing the mirrors. Ultimately, we took the frames to the mirror company who cut the glass to the frames and then installed both mirror and frame. (It is hard to install the large mirror if the frame is already on the wall.) I hope your trim guy is willing to make the frame bigger so you can get the set up you want with the light on the mirror. I personally love large mirrors rather than a mirror just hung over the sink because i don't stand in front of my sink when doing my hair or makeup.

Yes. You TELL your builder (remove the word “ask” from your vocabulary; he works for you) to do what you originally told him to do. Period. Have you done that?

Thank you for the helpful advise. The frame will come off the wall. I've seen most of my builders homes. My concept is not one he has tried. The mirror guy isnt confident he wont break it. They will "try" but I dont trust it. You have been great. I will contact Robinson Glass. I appreciate your helpful manner.

Needs a much bigger mirror than that small little summer camp craft "frame" that they came up with. That is not proportionate to everything else happening.

Lights and outlets get mounted in mirrors ALL THE TIME. Yes it is more work and slightly higher risk of breakage.

Yes, two of our three bathrooms have large full wall frameless mirrors with the lights mounted through the mirror. The big key here as others have said is to have the mirror manufacturer, not the contractor create the hole with dimensions coordinated with the contractor. Glass companies do this all the time. And if the mirror breaks while they are making it, that is on them.

My master bath mirror is large and has 3 holes for 3 sconces. My GC and his mirror guy do it all the time and not something they even worried about. GC and I decided on best location for the sconces. Mirror guy came to measure and they made the mirror based on the actual worksite measurements. It worked out perfectly.

I am meeting with the actual glass guy next week. I sent him the photo and he said there shouldn't be a problem. He agrees a much larger mirror is needed.
Should I move the power box up or leave it be? I like a large framed mirror
  • 7 years ago
I may nix the frame and go with beveled mirrors..

Beveled mirror(s) would be more timeless feature. Good mirror installer should be able to execute this easily. Done all the time!!

I was told that the mirror might break and then I got the speech on how much more it will cost to replace the mirror. I am concerned with the dead space

Okay, I get that ... though I think the builder should've brought up that concern while you were still in the "let's plan and agree stage" rather than now mid-construction.

Could you go with two pendant lights ... one on each side of the sink? Pendants in bathrooms are fairly rare, but they may be the simplest way to get what you want.

You could go with a taller mirror, and you'd still have the reflected light. You could also place the pendants at face-level, which would give you more flattering light. Here are a couple examples:

One more thing about your inspiration pix ... note that the mirror is a few inches more narrow than the opening. That is, you can see the wall on the sides. When you're framing the mirror, I think that makes a difference.

I like the proportions of your inspiration pix, and I like a wall-to-wall mirror ... but the frame your builder has popped on the wall is poorly proportioned.

You'll have great storage when this bathroom is done.

A mirror that wide over a single sink is pointless.

Totally disagree. Sure, narrow mirrors are trendy today, but I much prefer a large mirror over the sink -- they make the room seem so much larger, they allow you to step back and see not just your face/hair but your outfit, and they reflect light. If you step to the side, you don't lose sight of yourself in a larger mirror.

What a great sample vanity. Every bit of it is simple, but it's very pleasing in proportion and detail, and so much storage!

Lights and outlets get mounted in mirrors ALL THE TIME. Yes it is more work and slightly higher risk of breakage.

Yes, I'd expect to pay more for a mirror-mounted light fixture, but clearly it's possible.

Can I say Wow? That was wonderfully helpful. It will be a large mirror. I am new to building a home. I dont know that I can afford an additional power box installment. lighting has already arrived. Would it work for me to eliminate the mirror frame and fill the space with a large beveled mirror..mirror I side or above? there is a second smaller vanity in the Bath.

Go large with beveled edges 1-1/4” bevel will work. Size so it avoids wall outlets if possible. Do same spacing above each vanity. In other words inches from sides and top and bottom should be the same. Don’t let them set bottom edge down flush to any countertop surface. You will get water under back of mirror and in time it will destroy mirror silvering. Stay firm. Don’t be tentative. Draw a picture of exactly what you want then discuss on site.

I found a few pictures of mirrors. These are done mainly wall to wall. That is an option. But no bevel if you choose to try wall to wall. Walls are seldom square and straight so that is riskier. I appreciate that last photo. I see you have a 3” stone splash. You can put mirror on top of that but leave a 3-4” border on sides and go up well beyond your light fixture junction box. I would go up as high as you can afford. Lol. Here are some looks. In our current home, we have beveled mirrors sitting on top of about a 8” stone splash.

Flo I have 2 can lights plus the exhaust fan light and a chandelier going over the tub. I plan to mount a magnifying mirrior off the cabinet. I did what I could to take the cookie cutter out of the house on a very tight budget. These are pictures of model and another one just like mine. PS..Theirs cost more.

I think you did a really good job. I like the look outside too. Sounds like once you get in you can see if your layered lighting plan is sufficient for your needs. I find I actually use my lighted magnifying mirror on my make up vanity very effective. So since you have a good overall plan I think you will be fine. Thanks for sharing. I like your trim around the mirror better than the model! Kudos!

    Accent wall or not?

I have to say its looking good, but I really dont understand the light fixture you chose for the Master bath room. It really doesn't fit the style in there, and those light bulbs are going to cast an awfully yellow hue let alone be right in your face. And that clear glass is going to fog up quickly in there...........food for thought on that one.

The original plan had to get scrapped and purchasing new lights is not in the budget at the moment. I have natural light coming into the bathroom from 2 walls.

I didn't do my homework on mirrors but the windows open and they will resolve any big issues for now. I did what I could with a no wiggle room budget to make this look less Cookie Cutter Model home. RL Reloaction, what vanity lights would you recommend for the master bath? The Den Bath is part of my husband's library/office. It is meant to have a masculine feel.
