I too think its the rootstock. But if they like it and it appears to be floriferous and of wildlife value why not leave it alone? It hardly looks as if the rest of their garden is a showstopper. I'd address the bindweed before worrying about the rose. After a while they might get fed up with the thorns and the unimpressive appearance when not flowering and get rid of it of their own accord.

R. multiflora is still used as a rootstock. The one in the photo could be the pink flowering form of R. multiflora. It is considered an invasive species in many areas of the US.

Yes, R multiflora is a major problem up here in the Northeast and unfortunately like most of the invasive species is unappetizing to deer so they leave it while wiping out all the native flora.

Photo not adequate to be certain of any particular rose. And there are named garden selections that don't look particularly built up and far removed from wild rose species or primary hybrids. Yet are still in fact garden roses.

it's in Europe, so the species are not botanically a invasive species or on any lists.

it's an alottment, that is a small garden for rent, so that great beast if a rose is at least in the wrong spot ,

too near to a pathway wher the annuals canes scratch your eyes out, kind of, just when passing by.

yea, and apart from the bind weed, the flower stalk is a flowering weed grass, Elymus repens, couch grass ?, so the garden has many problems

as I agree that the foto is of medium quality, I'm still quite sure that this rose is root stock, it flowers early, just once,

so perhaps the new owner are more likely to shovel prune it, they just don't manage even a basic pruning...
