Thank you Rawketgrl - and great idea. Even just painting a main wall white may help me get a neutral starting perspective of what the woods and carpet are really doing for me.

So wishing I could just do my usual Revere Pewter, but I sense it will not work with the yellow in the cabinets and the tan carpet. Maybe I'm wrong lol

Its a beautiful cabin. Love all the wood. The ceilings are gorgeous. I do understand why you want to change paint colors. Yellow was never a good choice with your stain color on your trim. I do agree, buy a lot of white primer, and primer everything white, and then, you will find it much easier to pick the right color for your house.

I would abandon the idea of grays in this space...it's not right imho.

You want warm and cozy, and that calls for warmer colors and lots of texture (you're off to a great start with the wood and stone...keep going in that direction)

Plus, perhaps this is a great way to have a different feeling space than what you have in your other home.

Pennydesign, I agree - thank you! Any ideas for those fresh, updated non-grey paint colors are welcomed, as tan-based environments (millet!), I stepped away from years ago.

Your mountain home is gorgeous!! Congratulations! I love the stained wood and totally agree leaving it! It should be the focal point of a mountain home! Paint everything a neutral gray and decorate the home with mountain themed pieces while mixing in bolder colors. I really like your island color! Keep that! :) Paint the walls first and then decide to paint the other cabinets later on! :) Hope this helps! Happy Decorating!

(hoping to not do that - $$$) Or, are you recommending that by painting the walls a gray that it will actually soften the yellow woods and update the space. Beautiful cabin! I agree with those who've said NOT to paint your walls gray. In a cabin, you want to accentuate and brighten the wood, not oppress it with gray walls. I'm not usually a fan of avoiding color on walls, but in the case of a cabin and in particular with the amount of wood you have in yours, I think off-white walls would be a great choice. Add the color with accessories. (I've always loved the colors in Hudson Bay or Pendleton blankets for a cabin.) White walls in the kitchen would also freshen up the look of your cabinets and blue island.

Thank you jay06! Any particular off-white you'd recommend? Doing off-white throughout would certainly be a simpler option and easier to tell the painter, without accent walls, wall paper areas, etc.

I would try SW Natural Choice for all your walls. It is a great off white that will work very well with the wood and other elements in the wonderful Mountain place you have found. Try this color and I think it will enhance everything and brighten things up without adding yellow. Good luck.

Jill, I'm definitely not an expert on whites, but this article might help. I think it would be best to stay away from any white that has strong yellow undertones and is more neutral. This article focuses on Benjamin Moore colors, but they can be mixed in other brand paints. popular whites

I would do a sage-y green on the walls...However, you have to like green :)

I would aim for a classic lodge feeling in your home...it's halfway there anyway.

Flo's recommendation of SW Natural Choice looks like a winner, and SW Alabaster is also that neutral off-white you should look for.

Start an Ideabook for "Scandinavian cabin" and see what kinds of spaces come up with that. Flo's paint choice is great. Congratulations for finding such a special place.

I had a white on white home 25 years ago. The color I used was Icing by Devine Paint (it was since bought out by Valspar/Sherwin Williams and they dropped the line, but the color is still available as a custome mix at Benjamin Moore. The color code in their color match system is V0101W (Icing)

In the formula on the Gallon can of Regal Select Eggshell Base 1 549 1x is:

S1 0x 0.0000

W1 0x 30.7500

Y2 0x 1.0000

O1 Ox 0.2500

This is very similar to Cloud White, but I tried a sample of the cloud white and still preferred this color (using it currently for trim and inside closets).

It does not read yellow/green or blue or gray. It reads white, but is just muddy enough to not be too stark against woods, but clean enough that it doesn't feel old and dirty.

Whites can be funny - my sister's white has a slight green undertone and it reads green at times. Many can be too stark and sterile and others turn yellow or gray or look dirty.

My other sister has a lot of wood in her home (Tudor house) and Icing complemented her wood beautifully. Again, we tried 5 or 6 other whites before she also settled on Icing.

Off white may be the winner. I'll try and sort it down to the final choice and get the painters in there. Looking forward to my after. Thank you again everyone here for your ideas!

One last comment. It's worth trying out a few whites in different light conditions--daylight, nighttime to make sure the paint has the level of warmth and contrast you want.

I inherited a mountain cabin 3years ago. Most of the walls are wood so not much to paint. I painted the laundry room light beige and didn’t like it opted for a light sage green for the bathroom and very pleased with it. Trim is White Dove from Benjamin Moore. I forget the name of the green. I’ve been using white dove for years it’s a great color works well with just about everything

Agree that the gold color is dated and too dark. Your place will always appear dark with the beautiful wood ceilings. I would try to lighten the other items that you can. The kitchen cabinets can be worked with, but changing out the backsplash and counter tops to something lighter would be a good start. The blue cabinet in the great room should definitely be lighter. Maybe the same white or cream as the walls. It stands out too much as it is and looks busy with the other furniture in there. Looks like a beautiful home!

White dove is a good cream color with wood tones. Shoji white was suggested to me. And Creamy SW.

I agree that a creamy white will help to unify all of your spaces &brighten it.

I would choose a color that matches the background of your chairs, the lighter stone of your fireplace and your rug. something that will work with all 3 will help unify the space yellow is a hard color. I had a custom gray mixed once to match a couch, because it was going over yellow walls, the gray looked purple until every bit of yellow was gone. the cabinets may not be as bad as you think after you've painted everything else. Beautiful place.

The tone of your cabinets is going to play a major role in choosing the right paint. Take a cabinet door with you to the paint store (not the home store) and ask for their color matching expert to help you pick exactly the right off white. Just buy sample pots of the colors you find and get some big white poster board. Paint a square or rectangle of color in the middle of each board. The white boarder will help keep your current paint color from distorting the sample. Move the boards around in different light, times of day and night and weather conditions to find the one that stays the way you want it to look all the time. When you go back to buy it, find a compatible white to do the ceilings that are looking rather dingy. The paint specialist will be your best friend.

Beautiful home! agree You need to lose the gold yellow. agree White is the way to go. Eat some primer and some paint samples. Agree bm white dove might work, might be a good place to start. You need to look at any paint many times during a day/night. Dunn Edwards swiss coffee might be a good one for you too,if you live out west.

Ohhh these are great paths forward, thank you so much to each of you. White poster board and sample whites is on my to do list for tomorrow and I'm excited for trying them out in the space.
