dining area update

last modified: 7 years ago

Ouch, so i initially had some ideas for redoing my dining area (the chairs and light fixture have to be replaced) but based on the harsh reaction, maybe someone can just suggest what to do here? I actually like most of my house, just not this area. will post pics of other areas of my house in the comments so you can see what kind of "style" it is.

I think the light was in gold also

Why can you not get the chairs that you really love? Why do you think they wouldn't be appropriate?

@penneydesign I'm not sure, the are the most affordable chair i've found and i'm not sure if i'm letting that influence my love for them. I'm worried they are too much of a statement and might look start against the darker table and floor, i'm also thinking maybe the black version could work? I've been looking at some wishbone style inspired chairs in a similar color to my table, but haven't found anything as affordable as i'm looking for (around 100$ per chair).

thank you all for being so helpful, i went home at lunch and took some photos of the larger area and am thinking maybe the attached chairs may look nice (keeping in mind, the light fixture, wall art and rug are all going to be gone) what do you think? i would probably use three on each side of the table and leave the ends free

Well, I think you should get what you love...I think the white ones would look lovely!

It seems a bit dark from the photo so it would brighten the area...

thank you for the suggestion, everdebz , but given the toddler that sits here to eat and do crafts, I need something with no fabric.

thanks @pennydesign, I think I just need someone to let me know that i'm not way off base with those chairs :)

I am jumping in and have not read all the comments, but I was on Scandanavian Design looking for furniture for a client and I saw these chairs. There is a 10% discount for new customers who sign up with email.

I like them because of the caning and how the color/texture works with the rest of the house and still with a touch of black and stainless….and no fabric.

Okay are you thinking of the fancy ones or the knockoff?

I'm wondering if you just get two of the knockoff ones off Amazon, you can try them out before committing...

ETA or one....I see they sell them singly, too.

The white chairs would be beautiful

pennydesign , the white chairs pictured are sold on wayfair in sets of two for about 210$, which is right on budget. I will shop around, but its looking like these are the ones. Will post updates as I get things changed up

I have just come across these chairs which I think i like more than my initial pick (more affordable too) with the white chair and wood base I worried that when we replace or refinish the table later on, the leg color might limit us. These seem to fit the bill perfectly.

So just an update, I've pulled the trigger and ordered the all white chairs above. I also went another direction with the dining light fixture and since I've been wanting to switch out the kitchen pendants for a while now, I'm using the dining room redo as an excuse. So here's what I'm doing:

Gallery wall of 8 photos similar to the photo below, but slightly lager frames and two rows of 4 as opposed to the 3x3

White chairs - 3 on each side of table and open ends

Pale grey curtains on dinin groom window (which match drapery on all other windows visible in the area

    Gold candle style chandelier

Larger scale white pendants for kitchen island (these new ones are 13 inch diameter compared to roughly 8 or 9 for the originals.

    Remove rug

    Add some greenery

VERY excited to see it all finished

Just a quick update: the chairs have arrived and I love them. Also added the curtains, really looking forward to the new light fixture and gallery wall. I removed the rug and it looks bare to me. Not sure if I should be looking for a rug or if I’ll get used to the look of not having one under the table.

I love the chandy you selected. I was actually liking the hampton bay one way at top of thread and the one you ordered is similar so I think it will look great.

I think the new photo you just posted looks good, but I think the angle of the photo is not flattering to the room.

I like! I think you should live with the bare floors until light and art are in. I like the minimal modern open feel!

Thanks salonva, I agree, not the best photo, I was attempting to not photograph some mess, here’s another view, again, not a great photo but I will be sure to get good angles once it’s decorated (excuse the leftover paper on the wall from laying out the gallery wall-what you see is not the planned arrangement, we are going with a grid of 4 wide by 3 high)

I think the gallery art should be a bit further apart, more like at least two inches between the frames. Black frames with a white mat, and all in black and white photos or prints. The table and chairs look great on the bare floor and will be easier to keep clean with a toddler. It will be interesting to see with the new chandelier, but I would match the metal to whatever finish your kitchen hardware is.

It's all coming along very well and I don't think you should ever doubt yourself or your taste...

I will suggest additional curtain panels though...

A little more progress, need photos in the frames and to decide whether I want to keep the other artwork. New light fixture and some greenery should finish it off.

Nice! Can you make your drapes a little fuller/extend them out more? You've gotten further than me! Living with blue tape walls here!

I’ll try extending the drapes, they were bought at winners 4-5 years ago so I can’t get additional panels. Love the 6 square frames,I have something similar in my entry that I switch the pictures out in depending on the season/

Can anyone suggest a plant type/size for the dining space? I want something but not sure what it should be
  • 7 years ago
I think I like the light fixture. It still looks like something is missing, but hopefully once I get plants in the space it will look complete

Thanks Kulrn, those are just the look I’m going for. I’ve got some options on the way. The dark stock photos in the frames are throwing it off for me as well, I’m looking forward to getting the real photos in
  • 7 years ago

Maybe something a little taller on table?

It looks lovely...for me, what's missing is a colorful centerpiece on the table

Something contemporary...I can't get the photo to load, so here's a link to some cute vases?

You did good job. I like your light fixture. Curtains look skimpy.

Who would have thought that the plant would have such an impact? lookin' really nice! you are right- each little change really goes far.

Loving your space! Can I ask how you hung your frames? I'm nervous about getting mine nice and even!

Maybe it is the picture on my monitor, but the light looks too high from the table....if the ceiling is 8 feet the bottom of the chandelier should be 30-36 inches from the table top. If the ceiling is 9 feet tall, the bottom of chandelier should be 33-39 inches from the table top. I like what you are doing!

Kulrn, did a lot of measuring to get the frame even, basically found the the centre of the wall, decided how high I wanted the top row and measured the two hanging brackets (is that what you call them?) on the back of the frame and placed the picture hangers. From there I made a template that included the space needed between the frames to place all of the hangers, measuring to make sure they were level each time. It was surprisingly easy, getting the first one hung right was the most important. Then I just popped them all on the wall. Happy to report I didn’t need to hammer any extra holes.

Thanks for the advice on chandelier height Susan, it looks higher in photos than in real life, but I will double check when I get
Home. The fixture came with three identical rods for adjusting the length, so the only option would be to increase the length 50% from what it currently is, which would be too low. Maybe I could have the third rod cut to a custom size and make it work.

Small update, I wanted some storage for linens etc in the dining area and found a great diy using inexpensive shoe cabinets. Part way through installing here, and I had initially planned to stain the top dark, but now thinking of leaving it. Happy with the result either way! (And still choosing photos for the frames!)

Looking so much better. Don't stain, it blends in well now.

    Shoe cabinets?! Smart !

Wow your room is lovely, what a change from the original, you have great taste, good job!

I also like the way it is now. Your room looks great! I wish I had thought to do that storage solution. I've wanted a buffet, but no room. I got my art hung now also, so it's not moving at this point!
