Water base paint for cabinetry is very difficult to keep from chipping. The best paint is lacquer. If you are not in California, you should be able to paint with lacquer base paint. However, you cannot apply this over a water base paint or primer as it will peel up in less than a year. You will have to go back and sand and re prime. Short of that, water base paint is soft and takes 2-3 weeks to dry on cabinetry if that. Could also be that the cabinet was not primed well.

How long did you let it cure?

I believe the painter only let it dry possibly 12-18 hours between coats? we are in illinois can we use lacquer?

I always use BM paints. Prep is utmost with any brand.. if the cabinet had a finish before it was primed, it should've been scuff sanded thoroughly. Pigment can be added to primer. Oil based paints wear best and are worth the initial odor and cleanup.

I hope you didnt pay a professional-price to have the cabinet painted.

Advance is a fine paint for cabinets. If the paint is coming off down to the primer layer, then you know that the Advance is having a problem sticking to the primer. If the paint was coming off down to the old finish, then you know it is a problem with prep. You need to figure out why the Advance isn't sticking to the primer and solve the problem with that layer. Adding other layers on top will not solve the problem. What primer was used?

Latex paint is fine for cabinets but it take a while to cure fully. once I painted baseboards and let them cure for 2 weeks before having the carpet installed. When I commented that the installers had not blemised an inch of baseboards the guys said I had used high quality paint, and that most people did not. Not true, it was decent paint for a rental but it had cured so hardened. Possibly adhesion was of higher strength with curing but no polymer scientist here.

How many chips? How long since painted? How hard are you on your cabinets? I would lightly sand the chip area and touch up., feathering it out. If not smooth when dry use brown paper bag as sandpaper to smooth. Try to be mindful of the touch up areas for a couple of weeks. just curious, did the primer stay on the cabinets for a while before topcoating? Because everything sticks to primer....everything....but primer cures which is one reason why preprimed doors say to lightly sand before painting (Other is to knock off imperfections).

BM Advance is not a latex paint. It is a waterborne alkyd. The chemistry, film formation, and performance are totally different. Products like Advance ( and Fine Paints of Europe Eco products) were developed to address the high levels of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) emitted by standard solvent based alkyds.

As Paintguy22 stated they are a fine paint to be used for cabinetry. From what you've described, you have an adhesion issue. It is possible that the primer used is incompatible with the Advance. I know that Fine Paints of Europe Eco is not compatible with some Zinsser primers.
