The two nightstands should be the same, but they don't need to be the same as the other furniture.

I agree with Sina, I like it when the night stands match each other, even if they don't exactly match the other furniture.

I like mismatched as long as they are the same height so if you have matching lamps, it looks balanced.

There was a time a few years ago when the trend was to have non-matching nightstands. Sometimes still today that can work, but overall I like it when they match exactly. If they don't match, then I would at least match the dimensions best I could, but no, I don't think the shape would have to match, again if that mismatched look was what you were going for.

When I redid my guest room I used two totally different side tables. One can be seen as you look down the hall when the door is open so that view was more important to me than matchy match.

They need not match, but similar height and a common feel is nice! In that instance? The bedside LAMPS should definitely match. Much depends on what else is in the room.

An upholstered bed, a dresser and one side table that matches it. A PAIR of matched lamps, and a different material for a single side table. That can work. .....metal base and stone top, or glass top etc. Location matters, you want balance.
