The first part is to figure out what needs to be stored in the space. Do you have dressers in the bedroom or is this the only clothes storage? Do you need to store all of the seasons clothes in the space ? Do you collect shoes. My advice would be to get a closet organizer company to help with this it is more complicated than you might imagine.

It will only be my closet, my husband will have have his own. I'll need shoe storage and I want shelving. It will hold all seasons of clothing. Our bedroom will hold all dressers or chest of drawers so those won't be going I a closet. I've seen some amazing ideas for multiple things that people have designed for other posters, I'd love to see some ideas.

Agree with Patricia, there’s no generic closet, it depends on your needs and wants, who’s doing your remodel? Do you have a designer? My contractor who is also a designer took down my ideas and needs and drew out a plan on paper, we both made changes and now it’s starting to come together. A custom closet is just that...custom!

For example, this is my largest wall, I believe it’s 9 feet long, this will be my display cabinets and vanity area, with drawers for lingerie and all that, glass cabs for display shoes, upper glass cabs for display handbags, etc.. 2 long sections for maxi dresses.

There are 1000s of ideas online but they are not always what you need . When I got married I had 250 pairs of shoes my closet had to be done to house them now I have 50 pairs don’t need the same closet layout anymore . Get someone to help you with this it will be worth every penny.

This layout works off the long walls (which is most efficient) and leaves space for a mirror on the end wall. The linear hanging = 16 ft, 4 drawers, shelving for 32 pairs of shoes, and shelving for more shoes or handbags

Move an outlet above the drawers so you can charge your phone.

Closets are like snowflakes--no two measure the same :) However, this narrow closet I did gives a sense of what the a clean, modern, white melamine design would look like.

Also, thank you for the information you gave, especially about the shoes, I never would have thought of the average width of a pair of shoes!

There are DIY closet design companies on line, where you can design each wall of your closet, and try out different designs. We then had a local closet company come in, look at our plan, tweet it, and install. We’re very happy with the results.
