Nope, that's probably the document number / part number of the user manual.

Assuming it's a Whirlpool-built machine (after circa 2006), the model/serial tag typically is affixed to the rear of the loading port under the back edge of the lid ... open the lid at an angle for a better view there. Might be something like MTW9999XW0. The serial number probably starts with letter C (it's coded for the year and week of manufacture if you want to cite it for that info).

I can tell by the model .... it's a last-generation Whirlpool-built direct-drive machine. They added an automatic water level sensing function an effort to extend the production life of the design when water usage restrictions went up a notch.

The sensor circuit is integrated into the water temperature selector switch and is a common failure ... sometimes exhibiting the goofy behavior you're seeing of spraying water into the final spin, among other things.

I would do the repair. This machine is one of the most reliable and
robust ever designed and simple to repair in terms of mechanicals
(notwithstanding the control changes on this particular one). Whirlpool
produced many tens of millions of them from 1981 to approx 2012.

Replacing it is a reasonably simple DIY procedure. I can give you instructions if you're interested ... with the disclaimer that I can't 100% guarantee this the problem when diagnosing from afar.

The level sensor can malfunction and go into a permanent lock-out if water siphons back into the machine through the drain hose. Well you were probably writing this is the repairman was fixing it. They were able to get me in today and yes I believe that is what they replaced.

DH could have probably fixed it but really didn't seem too interested. We almost bought a new machine instead so I'm glad to hear fixing it was a good call.

Thanks for your input. We have known the local Maytag guy for years thru kids so we don't feel awful about boosting his income! ;-)
