well I would want to know if you actually use the tub and enjoy it.

because a contractor wants to earn more money by telling you to do something doesn't mean you should do it.

also with the home design trends the way they are, just wait a bit and it will be tight back in fashion

Ick. Jacuzzi tubs, especially 30-year-old used Jacuzzi tubs squick me out. Have you ever turned one on and seen black goop shooting out of the nozzles? <shudder> And if you’re going to the major expense of a bathroom remodel (I’m in the thick of one) I can’t imagine why you would keep an old tub. Our demo revealed lots of mold from an improperly waterproofed tile job. Who knows what you have under that tub.

If you like bubbles, air baths are a much more sanitary alternative. Freestanding tubs are lovely (and expensive). I would replace with a rectangular drop in tub.

I agree that it would be foolish not to replace a 30 year old Jacuzzi unless you really like the Jacuzzi experience. Have you found out whether it is still functional or what the estimated useful life of the jacuzzi features are?

I would not replace a tub with a freestanding tub since it's far less functional than a built in tub. Harder to get in and out of and harder to clean around. It has trickled down from high end large bathrooms to middle class bathrooms where it is squeezed into a space instead of being freestanding.

At some point, people will look back at the era of freestanding tubs in middle class size bathrooms as being ridiculous as Jacuzzi tubs.

Thank you! Although we haven't used the jacuzzi tub yet, we have plans to use it fairly regularly at some point. I like the idea of an air bath, never considered that. Maybe something like the attached, with a tile surround might work instead of a freestanding tub? I have the same reservations about a freestanding tub as was mentioned. It looks nice, but doesn't look like it fits.

We replaced old jacuzzi tub in our remodel because every time we wanted to use it, I first had to go through a time-consuming cleaning process using bleach and running the bleach water through the jets. By the time I finished all that I wasn't in the mood to use it anymore. Replaced with a drop in (no jets) soaking tub with stone decking. DS did the airbath version, but they still don't use it. Most people prefer showers, but if you want a bath I recommend a drop in (air bath if you wan bubbles) with stone surround.

If you're going to expense of remodeling, post a floor plan with measurements. Some pros on here might be able to recommend a better layout.
