Can you describe what it looked like before? Did it have flowers? What color?

Lots of small wedge shaped amber color

Off hand I'm going to say it may be dormant. Until Late March it's hard to say if it will bounce back. Until then keep it weeded, get rid of any vines around it and treat it like always. If no green leaves by March check the cambium layer.

Take your fingernail and scratch the stem down close to the bottom..see if it is green or whitish. If its dead dry brown then the stem may have died. In that case it might come back from the roots. If not, you might have to get a new one.

That may be. Its been looking like this all last season though. Can i do something to help it come back? 2 yrs ago it looked big and healthy. My wife cut it back quite a bit and it didnt bounce

Herman, just give it time. Clean up around it and wait. I know it's hard to be patient, but a lot of stuff hasn't come back out here in 9a, so it may take some time. Just don't fertilize it yet. You never fertilize a dormant or sick plant.

Can you describe the flowers a bit more or do you have a picture of it in bloom? I don't know of any wisteria with amber colored flowers. Does it have thorns? I'm thinking it may be a bougainvillea the way you describe the flowers.

New leaf growth. Anyone know this?
