Need advise for ailing 14 yr.old cat

Kelly, my 14 yr. old was born feral but with patience, was able to bring her into our house and she's been inside ever since...Very lovable, vocal fur baby but won't let anyone pick her up, but loves to be petted...She now is not doing well, not eating and hardly uses the litter and also looks like her tummy is starting to swell...The only time she's been in a carrier is to go for her spaying and now with her not feeling up to par, I hate to think of the trauma of forcing her into a carrier...I do have a feeling, the vet will say, it's time and I don't want Kelly's last moments to be so traumatic....I just don't want her to suffer and wonder if there is something a vet can order that would just put her to sleep without taking her out of the house....It does sound like I'm a terrible mom but I honestly don't want her to suffer....Any advice will be most appreciated.......

I know you're worried about her being traumatized but her going thru a trip to the vet will be a minor event compared to what she may go thru if not treated. She could easily have something that's treatable but the longer she goes without eating the worst she becomes. Not using the litter box is due to her not eating and drinking. Ask the vet for a same-day appt and get her on in. Stress with them that she needs to be seen ASAP.

I have a semi-feral like yours and she does fine once she's in the carrier and at the vets. My vet always says they have no problem handling her and she's very calm. Tip: when you get ready to put her in the carrier, place the carrier on it's end with the door open and facing up. Gently and quickly grasp her from her back and under her front legs. Lift her up and place her hind legs first into the crate...once her front feet are below the door, let her go. Close the door and place the crate upright. You can use a towel if you prefer but if she's feeling really bad, she probably won't resist much. Just try to stay calm and quiet......

If she does have a terminal disease then the vet can give her something to calm her while you visit with her at the office. Then euthanasia can follow.

Take her to the veterinarian. As the above poster said it may be something easily treatable. You won't know unless you go, and if it is something terminal you will know and can better prepare yourself and discuss options with the vet. You can call the office and maybe they can give you something ahead of time to help calm her for the trip. Our almost 18 year old cat is a really badly behaved patient at the vet office so he gets gabapentin prior to his trips there. Best wishes to you and her!

There are veterinarians that make house calls. I was in a similar situation with a mostly feral cat that lived in my house. I called Lap of Love, which is a mobile veterinarian in my area. They assessed my cat, and we determined it was not treatable. They euthanized him in my home, on my lap. The only time I was able to hold him. See if you can find a similar mobile vet. Good luck.

I’m really sorry you’re Kelly isn’t well, but I agree, it could be something treatable. 14 is definately Senior but our cats lived to be 19 and 22. Another option is to call a vet that specializes in Feline Medicine, when it comes to diagnosing they are the one’s I’ve had the best luck with.

Well, this is what I have done. I've had several cats, so I knew when the end was near. I called the vet and paid ahead of time. I had my man friend drive me down, and had him go in ahead of time, to see if it would be possible to just walk in with the cat. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can't. Doesn't hurt to ask. Last time I'd gone down with the cat in my lap, but the facility (not my regular vet) said nope, she has to be in a carrier. You will likely be escorted to an exam room near the parking lot, so you won't have to go back through the entrance.

It's really easier to pay ahead of time.

I just want you all to know, I did take my Kelly to the vet on the 14th and the vet agreed, it was time...She had developed a fast growing mass in her tummy and at her age, the treatment would have been too much for her.....The vet and her aide made the whole thing a very peachful event...They had explained everything they would be doing, asked if I wanted to be with her and could not have been more gentle and understanding....Kelly was made very comfortable, I held her and talked to her until she went to sleep and then they gave her the last shot and she slept away....Normally, my husband had been the one to handle this but he passed away almost a year ago so it was up to me...Instead of bringing her home, I decided to have her creamated and will bury her with my husband....It was a very hard decision to make but one that had to be done and I'll always be grateful to our vet for the patience and care they took with me and with Kelly....Sure do miss my little girl but know, she's with my husband in heaven and no longer hurting.......

It must have been very, very hard for you. You did the right thing, and it's never easy. She will rest peacefully, and I'm sure you gave her a great life. My thoughts are with you. It's so hard.
