Need help with window choice for large opening

last modified: 7 years ago

We just finished replacing 22 double-hung windows. Now we've turned our attention to the one remaining window. It is a 3 lite slider. We chose it 25 years ago for two main reasons: 1) we wanted the water view to be unobstructed by double-hung windows; and 2) the shallow depth of our porch meant that casement windows were out.

The window is quite large - rough opening a little over 8' wide. The glass area of the picture window in the middle is 47" x 47". The glass in the smaller windows is 19" x 47". We are having trouble finding a similar window. Do Andersen, Marvin or Pella make them? Are there other manufacturers that do? We found a similar Jeld-Wen window sold by Lowe's, but it's not big enough. Plus, we're looking for at least the same quality as the Andersen Woodwrights.

We are considering alternative designs, but don't like the look of a picture window flanked by two double-hungs. Most people would put a triple double-hung there, as our neighbors have done. We agree this looks best from an architectural standpoint, but just can't pull the trigger. Double-hungs would probably be tighter than sliders, but every time we think of having to look past the meeting rails of the windows, we get cold feet. The only other thing we can think of is to install 2 large double sliders side by side, but then we end up with additional mullions. Am I missing anything? We definitely need to be able to open the windows.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!
