Kitchen cabinet advice?

We bought our house (built in 1997) about three years ago, we painted the entire interior and refinished the hard wood floors prior to moving in. I am hoping to get some advice on my kitchen. The cabinets are a good quality and in pretty good condition but do show signs of wear and tear after 22 years. Should I have them stripped and repainted? If so could/should I then paint them a shade of white? I then wonder if I’m opening Pandora’s box and will want to change the granite and backsplash and if so should I just hold off a year or two and redo the entire kitchen? We live in the Boston suburbs and have been given quotes ranging between $8-$10K to refinish the cabinets. Any thoughts and advice are appreciated!

You’ve got a great space, but it could function better with a few tweaks,
as Jan suggested. In my experience, renovations or refreshes are always a snowball effect/opening Pandora’s box - one thing leads to another and it’s hard to stop when you have those thoughts that “the new X looks so good, but if we also do Y it will look even better!” So if you don’t love the way it functions now and think it could be improved (move the fridge, microwave, add hood, add pantry, etc.) start planning and saving for a full redo in a couple of years.

They look pretty best up up close and could definitely benefit from a full refresh. IMO, once you start this process you’ll want to change everything...

Do you love the cabinet style

Do you want a lighter look with your flooring

Do you need the dated desk, or would you rather have some pantry storage? Or a Fridge where the ovens are, and then pantry? That heat run can go in a toe kick!

I assume you don't love the back splash..... a microwave over a cook top.

A lot of questions, including do you love counter tops, what's the budget, how long will you be in the house, are you perfectly happy with layout, other appliances etc.

You are the only one who can answer them.

Eight to ten K will buy all new counter tops...................just saying. : )

Thanks Jan. I know you are right. I’d love a lighter look and hate the desk that has become a landing pad for clutter. I could see us in this house at least until my youngest child completes high school, so at least 10 years. The thought of a major renovation is overwhelming, but maybe something we need to prepare for.

keep and deep clean the cabinets, change out the hardware, change the back splash and counter tops, get rid of the window valance.

Make a book of dream kitchens, and start the piggy bank. Well planned? With all selections, materials ready to go? You can be done in 12 weeks, demo to dishes in a new dishwasher!

In the meantime.........save. Then get a good independent KD on your site. Not a cabinet seller : )

A reno to love for ten years is worth doing right. Once. So...what's your dream: ) ?
