In my country at the moment no one buys furniture that is not minimalistic, flat and sleek, so it's listed at really good price. Now I just have to persuade my husband :D

I really can’t see the legs in the picture shown, but yes, I too like a mix of modern & traditional added. It makes a room more interesting and somehow adds a feeling elegance to an otherwise ho-hum room.

No problem daneejela ... my mother always referred to her buffet type cabinet as a commode also, that’s what her interior decorator called it. I still remember that. When she passed away a few years ago I gave her commode to one of her neighbors who coveted it. Your use of the word reminded me of her, she was a very stylish woman with great taste.

I think it's probably a word with french origin, so probably that's why stylish women as your mother would use it :)

Regarding legs - it currently has some weird "stand base" instead of classic, separated legs. I think it would look more elegant with classic legs.

I think if you buy it, you should use it as it is—legs, hardware and all—especially if it’s an old piece. That’s what makes it a good contrast with your more contemporary style. Do you know how old it is? Do you know the provenance? It appears to have Moorish design influences.

By the way, are you French?

I think it's charming just as it is, and wouldn't change the legs. They add to the uniqueness of the piece, in my opinion.

Re use of the word "commode": I grew up hearing that interchangeably for "toilet", but I wonder if anyone even uses the word anymore, as I have not actually heard it in years. I would be surprised if the teenagers in my life have ever heard it.

I have a couple of pieces from my grandmother's family that we called "commodes." These particular pieces are more the size of bedside cabinets. They have one drawer and the lower part of the cabinet has doors with a couple of shelves enclosed. I was told that the chamber pot was kept on the lower shelf, hence the name "commode."

Commode to me is more of a chest than a sideboard or credenza- not a potty unless in a hospital setting, where they have portable ones to bring bedside.

I’m usually not a fan of ”updating” older intrinsically lovely furniture, so it would be nice to see a clearer photo of the legs and hardware of the commode/console/credenza/chest/cabinet. Sorry, couldn’t resist - they all start with “c”!
