Favorite Cabinet Lines?

Hi All,

We have always done fully custom cabinets in our projects. But, we are wondering, are we overspending on custom? What are your favorite maple door, dovetail drawer, wood box construction cabinet manufacturers?

What do you mean by custom?

I remodeled my kitchen this past year and used Wood-mode, which is a cabinet manufacturer in PA, but they are also custom. I was able to get custom sized cabinets and custom stain color.

I could probably have used a "custom" cabinet maker here in Los Angeles and paid less, so you'll have to make that comparison in your area.

Many of these small custom guys will build boxes at their shop, buy unfinished doors from a large manufacturer and stain/paint on site. CA has strict laws on "dangerous/toxic" paint products so the paints/stains that are available locally are not as durable as what can be done in a factory elsewhere in the US.

Very happy with the Wood-mode cabinets and would use them again.

I like my Medallion cabinets, which fit your criteria. I don't know how the pricing compares, but you could look into them.

I had Woodmode (previous owners,) replaced with Crown Point. Loved them both.

Thanks everyone! A contractor my husband wants to talk to uses showplace, but I read some bad things about their attention to detail. Glad to hear that you think they have good quality Green Designs.

Are you from mass? We have showplace semi custom island and cabinets and love them! They are a bit on the pricey side though!

Yes, we are here in MA, my husband just met a contractor he wants me to talk to, but I had never heard of showplace before. The reviews I read were mixed. Are yours painted fancyxx? Some of the complaints were that the factory finish wasn’t as high end as expected and that makes me a little nervous.

Omega or Plain and Fancy, hands down. But that depends on what level you are looking for. On a 1-10 cost level, you're Probably talking a 7-8. Only the designer branded name brand custom will be more expensive.

There are are perfectly fine cabinets in the 3-6 level range, if that's what you are looking for. Not everything needs "the best". Sometimes, decently built with some good options will be good enough.

Whats your kitchen size? Does it include an island? How large is the island? They are finished on all 4 sides, so that's the most expensive real estate in your kitchen. Cabinet prices rely on an average maybe 10x12 kitchen. No island or much of anything else that anyone wants. Most Houzz kitchens are double that size. Some are triple that size. If yours is large, you have to start doubling "average" prices for everything.

    What is your cabinet budget?

    Under 15K?

    15-30K?

    30-50K?

    50-75K?

    75-100K

    100-150K?

    150K+?

If you’re anywhere near Seekonk I would suggest going to kitchens direct. They have showplace and kraftmaid cabinets.
I didn’t really like the style of doors that kraftmaid had. On the other hand, Showplace had a number of doors I liked. Showplace also allowed us to actually customize our cabinets. We went with the savannah beaded inset. The cabinets are bright white and the island is black. Let me just say, I am super picky and hard to please. I spent countless hours researching cabinet lines and I can not recommend them enough. The cabinets came out flawless. I included a pic of our kitchen project.

I love my Omega Dynasty (Omega's semi-custom). I actually have a mix of Dynasty and Custom (now called Pinnacle). That's one of the great things about Omega -- I primarily used the less-expensive semi-custom in my Kitchen, but used Custom/Pinnacle for a few cabinets that had to be modified b/c it was cheaper to do them in the Custom/Pinnacle line than to pay a lot to modify the semi-custom. Most of their semi-custom doors and finishes are also available in the Custom/Pinnacle line, so it was easy to mix and match.

They also have great customer service. I had issues with my KD's company ordering the wrong shelves for my cabinets three times -- and they refused to order them again. I was so frustrated with them that I called Omega directly and they told me they would send me the shelves I needed immediately (at no charge) and that they would deal with the KD and her company. They arrived shortly and were exactly what I needed!

It's been eleven years now and the cabinets all look just as nice and function just as well today as they did when they were initially installed.

When we build again, they're #1 on my list.

I'll second Shiloh and Showplace! For higher end...Plain & Fancy! KraftMaid and Medallion are also very nice. When Kraftmaid has a promotion on their Vantage series (all wood, no PB....veneered interiors), it's a great deal.

Thanks everyone! We’ve just never ordered from a major manufacturer, so it makes me nervous. We’ve always used high end, local cabinet makers, so I just want to make sure that the cabinets can stand up to our busy family. I cook three times a day most days, so paint finish and construction need to be durable. We went to the home show last weekend and really liked the cabinets that we were quoted on, Knight Kitchens out of VT, so I think we will probably go with them. But we are looking at 22-25k depending on options for out 14x20 kitchen, so I just didn’t know if I could get a better price on similar quality by going with a bigger manufacturer. My KD thinks that is a very good price for what we are getting in terms of quality, options and finishes. I will check out some of the brands mentioned and have them quote it as well to see where we come out.

Thanks again for all of the input!
