Havent seen your most recent photo, however, probably too late to return if the blinds don’t work out? In any event, I have cordless ( great for children ) flat Roman shades that are lined. I was really surprised at how much light they block.

Looks nice but is the right side fuller than the left? Good luck with a 4 year old boy not getting those dirty. You might want to move his bed away from them.

Thank you K Laurence - I was thinking Roman Shades would of been a better fit for this size window - which is why I came on here to ask. :( I wanted to see what people thought of the drapes.

RNmomof2 zone 5 - the window is not symmetrical - I am thinking of taking lynartist's advice and not putting them fully across and then perhaps you won't notice the asymmetry as much!?

You can still do a beautiful custom Roman shade. I think we all get dazzled by beautiful inspiration rooms not realizing they may not translate so well to our rooms.

They are lovely. You can use a couple to frame the window if you like ; using romans inside. Can you use these anywhere ele in your home?

Hi Lynartist ---here is a tour of our home----we have removed all the drapery and are starting from scratch. Let me know what you think---the only other place I am thinking is perhaps the patio doors? But then would we need something in the LR? Right now we are leaving it all open because we like the scandanavian/rustic look and our backyard is private/full of trees

Very beautiful home! I think you can do stationary short stationary rods here and have side panels. It would look much nicer than what you currently have. I realize you didn’t want to cover the lovely woodwork but most of it will still be showing and this will add softness to your room. You have those beautiful linen drapes so use them.

If you have 3’ from the firebox you should be ok.

Unfortunately it is only about 1-2 feet.

I don’t think it looks strange, I am more concerned with safety. If this is too close to the firebox then it’s a no go:(!

Guidelines recommend 3’ so I think you can’t do this here. Can we move on to another part of your home?

Thank you for all your help - yes I am not sure if they will fit anywhere - my best bet I am thinking is to take the material - cut my losses--work some extra shifts and get them made into Roman Shades? Would you suggest one or two?

If you have a sewing machine, it is easy to make your own roman shades. Especially faux roman shades. Here is a good tutorial that I used to make mine. I am a novice. I hung mine with tension rods. Very easy.

Im confused. Did you put up blinds or drapes? Im seeing drapes. I checked out this site for myself and it was $900 for two panels so Im little baffled that you are now considering a roman shade? Am i missing something?

I think the drapes your husband put up look fine. Are you concerned by the little bit of asymmetry? Don't be. I would, however, turn the bed so its head is centered against the wall and put a nightstand on one side.

Char, I think they look fine hung this way. I’m a bit confused about the number of panels you have. If you have only two in this photo and you have extra panels not shown ???

These appear to have enough width to be operational so I would leave this as is. Since these were so expensive and can’t be used elsewhere just leave them as shown. I prefer this look to the whole wall being draped especially for a child’s room but that call is yours in the end.

Hi Linda117117 - I have been debating getting blinds or a shade for my sons room. My husband knew this thought he would "surprise" me by going ahead and making an order based on what was in my shopping cart online. When I got home after being away for a period of time for work I found out he had ordered them and put them up!! I do not think they are returnable. They are a huge investment and a lot of money. After reading everyones comments - they got me thinking it was a really wrong choice (impossible to keep clean, takes up too much of the room, window is too small ect).

So I am trying to find a solution - one of which was perhaps to use them in another area of the house -or the solution you are baffled by - to turn the material into roman shades using my own sewing skills. Not sure what to do:(

so sorry for the confusion - I have just two panels for the drapes. Not more.

In that case I think you have a bit too much drapery! I would rework these to frame the window area and be able to draw them to the middle. They should stack back neatly revealing most of the window but covering the woodwork on the sides. If you have enough fabric left make matching Roman shades.

ha ha-- a treasure is one word!! It has been quite the day. Would you do just the roman shades or the shades plus the drapes. I am thinking the shades plus the drapes would be too much??? What do you think??

These look fine. You don't have too much curtain; you just have too much rod.

OMG, please dont cut them up. If you dont want to use them in that room, (I think they look beautiful there), use them somewhere else in the house. They are too expensive to make in to a Roman SHade. Otherwise, sell them! People are looking for quality drapes every where.

If this is the full width that you have then fine; leave them if you feel they are not too full for that space. It’s hard to tell from this not to clear photo but my goodness , it’s no sin to alter these slightly to fit this rather tighter configuration.

Char, I wouldn’t do anything in regards to shades yet. Wait until you see how you feel about having drapes in this room first. Your son is quite young and you will be opening and closing those an awful lot....

I think they would look good by the fireplace...adds softness next to the stone. And drapes don't HAVE to stack back all the way onto wallspace...they can overlap the windows (have no idea where these "rules" come from)

Also feel that a wall of drapes is too much drama for a 4 yo boy. Blinds are much better.

I think they look great! I like them better stacked closer to the window rather than covering the whole wall. Just need to shorten that pole a bit, like Groveraxle mocked up.

I put drapes in my 3 year old boy's room...that was 4 years ago. Drapes are fine. He went through a little phase of hiding in them but moved on. Drapes are not dangerous, it's the cords of shades that are dangerous. And it sounds crochety, but get a stool and teach him to wash his hands when they get dirty, he's 4 not a baby, it's ridiculous to think that simple drapes will be ruined in short order by a 4 year old.

The drapes will grow with him, he won't be 4 for very much longer!

lynartist thanks so much for all your feedback and helping me figure this out! We will wait on the roman shades then and give the drapes a try - not having them cover the whole room- and cut the pole. I really appreciate the time you took to help me!

Oh my gosh - so great to hear you have had success Butternut with your little guy. Yes- he actually "doesn't like to get his hands dirty!!" Not like most 4 year olds. So far - he doesn't seem that interested in them.

They look beautiful! I have kids and white curtains floor to ceiling and have had no issues....fingerprints on windows are another story. Enjoy them and hug your hubby for doing a wonderful job!

Thank-you everyone for your help! I just found out the backing on the drapes was not correct - so they will take them back or change them into Roman shades - free of charge:)
