fireplace feedback

I've been sitting on this project for a LONG time, waiting for the right tile to present itself! To be honest I haven't found it, but want to move forward and I like the following two options, although only one has come in so far to see it in person. (The second one is on its way.) I'm trying to keep the current floor tiling to contain costs, but replacing the tiles at the bottom of the firebox as well as doing a surround. These are the ones I'm considering:

Photos coming up next and hoping they come through....

I'm wondering about the tile choice and the proportions. The tile size is a little under 5" and this represents using two rows on the right side and top. The left side will only accommodate one tile. I could do just one tile on the right as well if that makes more sense, but since they are on different walls I wasn't sure it made much difference. I was also considering bordering it with walnut similar to what is shown in one in the photos as it would tie into the kitchen counter. The tile does coordinate with the flooring, although my photos don't show it. The edging the tiles is a close match and the color on the tile is ivory which also blends. Any thoughts appreciated. When the other tile comes in I can share that as well. However, it is odd as it is 3 tile repeated designs that is presented on one tile as you can see in my previous post. I'll have to judge it when it comes but it strikes me as potentially odd.

I'm also wondering if you think I should be doing a mantel.

d-gw, were you thinking somwthing along this line?

I was thinking of a slate that has faint tan/brown accents that would work nicely with your floor and decor. Unfortunately I can't find any pics, most of the ones that I see online with brown accents are too busy.

I think the charcoal slate looks great. It's classic without being boring or trendy.

Do you like how the slate looks? That's all that really matters :)

The patterned tile gives it a southwest vibe which I'm not sure you want. The glimpse of your furnishings and the style of the fireplace suggests something more modern to me. Perhaps some small stacked tile, something with texture or stone tile where the natural graining is the pattern, or even a small marble mosaic.

I agree the patterned tiles won't work too well with the asymmetric design of the fireplace. Do you still have more floor tiles? I think that would work to finish it, tie it in to the floor and bottom trim of it without it looking too disjointed.

I would do something like this. No mantel.

THIS, all the way up. P.S I didn’t purposely try to make this sketch an Abstract lol.

And, using a product like THIS

    Or

    Or

    Or

    Or

Or, something that will blend with your future kitchen plans. Something simple that won’t clash.

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this...much appreciated. At one point I was going to use stacked stone, similar to those you posted justerrilynn. However to contain costs I was only going to go part of the way up the wall. i also didn’t want to wrap it around the kitchen side of the wall...so that left 3 exposed sides (including the top), and I wasn’t sure how to finish those off. I have seen some fireplace surrounds that were trimmed out in wood, which is why I was considering that element. I do have photos of some of this, however I have a guest currently sleeping in my office so I can’t access right now. I do have this one on my iPad which was an inspiration photo. I had really liked the smaller scale stacked stone, but haven’t been able to locate it in the right color. I’ll post those on my computer when I can. Thanks again...for some reason this has been a chore.

Jlsch- check tile stores for the smaller stone. Emser tile has them for sure. Probably many tile stores do as well
