The biggest problem I've found is the gnats that are attracted especially to fruit and vegetable scraps. Also wild animals are drawn to it, not something you want right on your doorstep.

When I lived in town, rats nested in the compost bin. They chewed holes through the plastic.( chewed through the "air holes" that are cut into them.) Now, I live "out" and use the tumbler bins. No rats, no wild animals. I'll see a cockroach every once in a while, but they are everywhere. Also using shredded paper for the brown component, which tends to mitigate the issues with too many food scraps.

When I lived in the country, I built my compost bins from pallets, with hardware cloth stapled on to keep the critters out. I also put a hinged lid and front gate on my bins made of 2x4s and hardware cloth so it could breathe, but nothing could get in. There was also hardware cloth on the bottom for the same purpose.

It may seem like an expensive and complicated way to build one, but nothing got into them.

the only issue i can think of is Black bears (if compost has a lot of food scraps), i've been around them and theyre fine and i like them a lot but one still would not want them accustomed to eating your scraps so one would have to invest in a proper container if they are around.

other than that, i do not think of rodents as a concern in non-urban florida. i have bird feeders and have for years. i have seen a rat twice and it is the native wood rat, not the invasive species. we have lots of natural predators (snakes especially) which help control their numbers. also personally, i do not care if occasionally a small creature eats food scraps in my compost bin. and i don't care about the fruit flies because they don't bite and my hummingbirds like to eat them.

(when i was temporarily living in the northeast i saw way more rodents)

anyway i would focus on having a good setup and making it convenient for you, so i would put it near the house.
