I've never grown ground cherries, but they are solonaceae and it is my understanding is that that plant family has adventitious roots. Plant deep.

Yes, their culture is like that of tomatoes, (actually most like tomatillos which they are related to). Start indoors in most climates and transplant out after last frost.

Thank you! Since our last frost in North Texas is this week, I am planning on planting my ground cherry seedlings next weekend. I'll be sure to plant them deep too!

I agree with Wayne_5 - ground cherries volunteer easily, even in my zone. Plant them once, and you'll have them forever. They grow very quickly, and actually seem to grow better from the volunteers than if started as transplants. I guess you could say that the best way to grow ground cherries is unintentionally. ;-)

I had some really old seeds I threw randomly into a planting area and got a bunch of productive ground cherries plants. I also grew them as transplants a few times. I just plant them normally (not deep) and they do great. They seem really easy to grow, so don't stress about them.

For outdoor plantings, don't plant early. They like warm weather.
