Help identify this plant/tree?

last modified: 7 years ago

Hello, I'm wondering if someone can help identify this plant? I was told it's an "orange peel" tree -- tho I may be remembering that incorrectly - I bought it at a plant sale at someone's house in June 2018. Also, around November 2018, the squirrels ravaged everything in our backyard including the soil that this little tree was planted in. As a result, it had a rough time outside and almost all of the leaves turned yellow and fell off. (probably from neglect, underwatering, cold weather.. but maybe also the roots were disturbed)

Three questions:

  1. What plant is this?
  2. Will the leaves grow back lower down on the "trunk", or is this poor plant destined to live out it's existence with a long gangly stock with no leaves on the first 20'' or so?
  3. Should I cut/prune the long spindly stem that stretches up (and thereby eliminate all the rest of the leaves?) -- will the stock at the bottom (in the last picture) put off more growth/leaves?

Thanks very much for your time and attention! I'd like to see this little guy make it for many many years to come!
