Could be Cestrum parqui 'Orange Peel'. It's desperate for light and isn't suited to being a house plant. We don't know where you are located so can't say if this will survive winter outdoors where you live. Its behaviour last November could simply be because it isn't hardy in your area.

I live in Sacramento -- I will move it to a more sunny area immediately ! thanks :-) . also, the plant expert who sold it to me said if I kept in the cup that it came in, it would grow "bonsai" style. I'm not going to put it in the earth as I'm gonna be moving soon- - I'll let ya know how she does !

Don't move it into the sun immediately. It needs hardening off to outdoor weather. Put it out in the shade for a couple of hours. Gradually increase the time outside day by day. It could be several weeks before it can take full sun. By all means if you're moving house keep it in a pot. But when you're settled, either plant it in the ground or give it a bigger container. It won't be a bonsai unless you give it a lot of care and attention to train and nurture it. It'll just be a stunted unhealthy plant.

Agree that it looks like an avocado.

It is not avocado. To me it looks very much like Cestrum leaves as floral said. The light bark color is also same. I have Cestrum Nocturnum which has white flowers instead of orange.

They want to grow tall but you can keep it bushy too. Wait till Summer and in late June you can do a hard chop to where the first cut was and it will grow vigorously., You can also root the top part with leaves when you chop it. It roots very easily.

My first thought was avocado too. I grew up in a household where my mother and grandmother could not bring themselves to throw the avocado pits away and we had these things going on the window sill all the time.
