You're on point with it getting busy & you're not far off with your direction. If you really want it to fade away, use a standard size (our eyes tend gloss over familiar things), matte white, light grey grout & standard subway pattern.

Stacked would become too geometrical that people would notice it, white or black grout makes most patterns also stand out more.

how about the white subway mother of pearl tile,it is glossy surface and we recommend off white grout

prob,,,you aren't relegated to only white subway tile. Since you do have a busier granite, I'd stick w/a solid color. you can do whites, creams, grays, blacks or even soft blues or bronze shades.

post a closer picture that shows the colors in your granite

here is what a standard 3x6 subway would look like (same countertop)

pretty boring. this tile is so overused I could scream.

at least the longer styles offer a little variation. Light White Shadebox:

you could go with the elongated picket style

or even this larger chevron. the key is to stay away from little, tiny mosaics.

scallop or 'fish scale' is also a nice change.

this one is a 3x10 soft gray tile from Tilebar (you can get 5 samples for $5.) This one is Calloway.

Lunada tile. Watercolors. vertical off-set.

black or dark charcoal would also look good

I too have white perimeter cabinets with a gray island. I went with a dove gray 3x6 subway tile and white grout.

They also have morning fog which is a little lighter

prob,,,in addition to my selections, here are some other kitchens with Bianco Antico countertops and their choices. I'll let you be the judge on what works.

a beveled white3x6. with this style of kitchen, it works.

this looks nice because the all of the white is surrounded with a deep chocolate paint color that matches the granite. if you like Arabesque, tilebar has this

this is bad. remember when I said no small mosaics? look behind the stove. way too busy. and forgo any accent lines of mosaics.

this looks like that tile from Floor and Decor with the lines in the glass. It's meh.

White onyx 3x6 tiles. would have looked better without the stove accent

taupe colored matte, ceramic tiles. looks like a 4x8 size. Yuk.

2x4 beveled ceramic tiles that come on a sheet. Nope.

2x8 glass tiles. this is ok. I'd like it better in a stacked pattern.

here are two photos with the longer subway tiles. one in gray and one in white.

I think these look much more elegant looking than the shorter 3x6 tiles.

I just used glass subway tiles and I absolutely love how it looks. Quiet and really allows the rest of my kitchen to shine and it was super affordable.

Lisa, very nice. I really like that dark hood and your accent. I think w/all the other subtle choices, that stove area is definitely your focal point.

which brand tile did you use

pick 4 others while youre there. Look at the Lancaster line (pictured) and some of the other longer tiles.

I think a nice change from all the gray would be this coppery bronze tone. it looks beautiful w/your stone. If you did a similar cabinet hardware it would look really nice

I like the bronze tile idea.

Definitely Matte but I would stick with 4x12 subway tiles. Whites and Greys will work best. Match the grout color to the tile color so it doesn't stand out. The countertops are busy enough. It will look fabulous in my opinion. :-)

Thank you, all, for the wonderful suggestions. I will definitely take some of these into consideration. I think I am leaning towards a 4x12 in matte... probably white or grey. I am struggling with the white because I am not sure whether to match the cabinets or the countertop (which has more cream than white, although the warm white seems to work). I love this site!!
