Native Peanut Tree - stopped growing?

last modified: 6 years ago

Hello!

New here, just wanted to know if anyone has any advice on what to do with my young peanut tree.

As normal it lost all its leaves come last winter, then spring and summer came along and I happily noticed young leaves starting to sprout.

Then everything stopped. Literally.

The young leaves have just stopped growing and I cannot find anything on the web that can help me understand why.

It’s in a well drained pot, and it gets sun, fertiliser and water. I’m a seasoned gardener so I’m not a newbie in that respect, just a newbie with peanut trees!

Any advice would very much appreciated.

Thanks

Where in the world are you growing this? You're aware that it's a tropical rainforest tree, no? Needs humidity and plenty of moisture. The closer you are to the equator, the more it'll thrive...
    Sterculia quadrifida

I’m in Australia and yes I do know it’s a rainforest tree.

If you're in a tropical or semi tropical area, the only obvious problem to me would be that it's growing in a pot. Maybe root-bound? Old potting medium depleted of nutrients, despite you adding fertiliser? Not using fertiliser that contains phosphorous, are you?

May be time to re-pot it with a fresh mix, a bigger pot if it needs it, or even better, plant it in the ground.

It's not specifically a rainforest tree, they grow in a wide range of habitats. From dry woodlands to vine thickets (which also have a distinct dry season) to rainforest with year round moisture, and coastal sand dunes. They also grow naturally right down into northern NSW, well outside of the tropics. So they should be quite adaptable. I've noticed Bunnings selling them.

You don't say where you are, that could be part of the problem, we can't know. Photos of the plant can also be helpful. How big is it and how long have you had it? And how did it go coming back from dormancy previously? Have you noticed any pests affecting it?

Hi there, I am located in Perth. There are no pests on the plant. I did attach two photos, but it seems the website has swallowed them.

It is not a very big plant and it’s in a large enough pot that I’m sure has not made it root bound. I have had it now for around two years.

As far as I can tell it is not dead. It seems to be growing at a glacial pace.

I will try and get some photos and upload them tomorrow.

    Thank you for replying.
