Chamblees nursery has been sold.

"To all of our wonderful rose customers,

We have some exciting news we would like to share with you. Mark Chamblee has owned the nursery since 1982, and will be retiring. The good news is the nursery has been sold to a family near the Tyler area. We are very excited about the new family ownership. They are committed to carrying on the quality rose growing production associated with the Chamblee name. The new owners will offer you the same personalized customer service, which we feel is the most important factor in maintaining a good business relationship. The location of the nursery will change, but the name will remain the same. In the coming days the new owners will provide you with further details regarding the transition. If you should have any questions regarding this recent change, please feel free to contact Krista Friend at 903-882-5153 for assistance.

Mark R. Chamblee"

I hope they maintain the great value, quality and service... Sorry to see Mark's departure.

I like that the shipping is 15 for under 100. I know the price increase is dramatic but , it puts them on pace with everyone else honestly. Heirloom has driven up their price so high chamblees is still a bargain. I hope they get new varieties in. Seems it’s been so long since they added anything new ! I’d like to thank Mark for all the years of great roses . He was my first online order , back when they offered Austin’s . I used to get a gift card every year for them from my mom . Hope he enjoys retirement and the new owners are successful!

I agree lilyfinch. He was my first along with Burling and I loved ordering from him until I ordered almost all I wanted.I guess I've just gotten used to the huge roses from ARE and Austin and am kicking myself for not having ordered those few I wanted sooner. I think that's why it's hard to swallow. They are in line with many others now, but due to a variety of reasons it's just something I can't do anymore to the extent I would have ordered prior. I've never ordered from Heirloom and probably never will unless they have one of their sales, which is when I also order from ARE. Time will tell if they increase their offering in which case I might consider them. However, if it enables the new people to stay in business, it's worth it for them AND all of us!

Oh yes vapor I totally understand and hope I didn’t come off as undermining anyone’s feelings about the prices ! I think it’s wonderful that mark kept his prices so low for so long. Perhaps they will be grown out a little more before shipping? I did love the bonus cuttings I would find , what a great find when you got those . I too , wish I had ordered before . I had wanted that pink Don Juan , and lady Ashe . Lady Ashe is on my northland order now . I’ll live without pink don, I think . lol you know how some roses get under you and you must have them or else !

Such a shame we slowly dwindle in nursery’s to choose from. Wonder what our children or grandchildren will have to choose from ?

Who knows? Maybe gardening will come back as edible gardening and backyard chickens seems to have done. You didn't come off in any bad way, lily! You would never be able to. I know about roses getting under ones skin and having to have it.... Lady Ashe is one along with PDJ and Quicksilver. It might be worth it if they are a little bigger plants next year if they have some oldies I want and then I'll just get enough for free shipping like I do with ARE.There aren't many left at ARE that I still want. I'm thinking I better get in my order with Burling now! Hers are even less available! I just wish she'd have Doc available.

    What rose is doc ?

I think it’s so interesting how houseplants and succulents are all the rage now . It’s crazy. ! My local nursery has gone crazy with them . They have 3 greenhouse full . And people pay the crazy prices and for the fancy pots too. You could easily spend 100 on a clay pot and basket of green leaves . lol

i stopped by to see their roses and that’s all the young sales man would talk about ? Oh are you hear to see our succulents ? Greenhouse 3.. cacti too! So proud . Lol nope send me to your roses .

I know! I guess they're hard to kill. I have a lot of cutting grown houseplants though! Doc is an adorable poly that's part of the Seven Dwarfs series. Can you even imagine! I don't know why I want it...I love how it fades to such a pretty pink, but I probably want it because it's never available. ;0 I wouldn't mind Grumpy and a few of the others, too.Doc

Oh that’s such a cute rose . Maybe someday you’ll be able to find it !

i ordered my first DA roses from Chamblee's years ago. When they stopped selling DA, i was so sad. This spring I was planning to have a visit to Chamblees and buy some Peggy Martin which is only $10.95, then I found that the price increased to $21.95. It shocked me but it is about the same price level with other nurseries.

Off topic but I’ve thought about ordering roses that never get mentioned here just to see what I’m missing. Never heard of Doc or the seven dwarfs here in 2 years of reading

I'd love to have a bed with all of them! And then Snow White!

Lilyfinch, most of my areas that are too shady for roses are covered with succulents, depending on what varieties you get they actually blend well with the roses and my chickens don't usually try to eat them :p Plus I don't feel as bad "wasting" water on roses if nothing else takes water. If anyone wants a box of succulent cuttings I can put them in the mail for you and they won't cost $100.

Wow.... it did not take long for the new owners to significantly raise the prices..... well, I wish them luck.

I think the asking price of buying Chamblee’s property was in the $3-5 million dollar range. (I saw the exact amount , just don’t remember it). So anyone who purchased it paid a whole lot more than Mark all those years ago, and probably has to increase prices significantly to cover the higher cost basis. I’m not making issue with anyone’s feelings about increasing prices, I’m a fan of bargain roses myself, lol! I’m just thinking about a reason prices go up so much when new owners take over.

Re the Seven Dwarf roses: Do you know Bob Martin, current President of the American Rose Society? If I remember correctly from a discussion on the internet, he was trying to accumulate all the Seven Dwarfs? A "way back" search with his name and the Dwarfs might turn up something. His garden has had two moves since then, so there's a slim chance, IF I've remembered correctly, that he might have shared cuttings with someone?

I had not realized they upped the prices so much. Ouch. They just eliminated themselves as a primary choice of supplier for me then. I honestly don't often do mail order because of the add-on for shipping which doubles the cost of roses. (Sorry, but I think the *doubling* of retail prices -- particularly on non-patented plants -- may be their downfall. They will have to do some very intense marketing, PR, and website updates to compensate for such. Their loyal customers now have no incentive not to shop the competition.) *sigh*

BenT: Did the new owners of Chamblees buy the property (which you indicated had been up for sale for several million dollars)? If so, do you know what plans the new owners have for it? And where will the new nursery be located? Mark indicated (business’ Facebook page) that the name would remain the same.

    Hi Rifis

I don't have any knowledge on the sale itself, I just saw the 'for sale' ad on a commercial real-estate listing. I'd assume since the value of the property is the land and rose-growing related equipment, the new owners would also be growing roses on the same land. Chamblee's is also in the heart of Tyler TX, a town centered around rose growing.

    Lily,

It is crazy how much certain houseplants are going for now. I have 4 variegated monstera deliciosas. Six or seven years go, I paid under $20 ea for the 2 large mother plants, when they were tiny, at a local nursery. Now they are going on ebay in the $150-$300 range for a little plant or cutting. They definitely arent worth it. Pink Princess Philodendrons used to be sold, 3 cuttings for $20. Now in the $100 range. They will all surely go to tissue culture soon and be back down to those cheap prices once the market is flooded. Seems like any variegated houseplant or weird succulents are all the rage right now.

SJNy, what outrageous prices! It must just be the fashion! I used to get cheap plants from Fla.... some guy and a truck used to bring them back up and sell them from the back. I still have those and their babies! I saw great plants in Fla. last year at the local garden plant sales and such. Jin just went to one where they had FABULOUS plants. If I had space in my suitcase, I probably would have had her snag me something. We have seasonal sales here at our conservatory, but they don't seem to propagate as many unusual things anymore. I got some different ones at a University sale a couple years back so I may pick up something this year along with the heirloom vegetables. We got a darling miniature orchid last year at the orchid sale.... I can't wait to see what they have this year. I'd love a variegated Monstera. Last fall before the freeze I snagged cuttings from some street plantings. They are all doing really well. I need some flowers to get me over the winter.

The really good sale to go to is Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in Miami. They usually have spring and fall plant sales. There are different vendors for diff kinds of plants and a lot of fun stuff to look at. You might as well bring a wagon lol. Its usually advertised on their website what the sale dates are. If I was coming from outside of FL to look at plants, thats where I would go. Other than HI, I think they have the best tropical plant collections.

Oh thank you! I'm very familiar with the Fairchild Gardens. :-) and the K pong. Some of my favorite books . Have you read them ? I think I need to drive down sometime! Maybe next fall before my dad goes down. Then I have a place to stay!

I don't understand what's going on, help me out, please.

Mark sold his nursery to a concern who will carry on a rose growing establishment maintaining his last name, Chamblee, as its name, but move the nursery to a different location. Am I right so far?

They just bought the nursery for a nice chunk of brass, but will open a nursery elsewhere using Mark Chamblee's name as its name. Either they own the new location or rent it. Why move? Why buy Chamblee's? Why not just open a new nursery in your own name in the new place if you own it or rent it?

Chamblee's was a nice nursery, known for giving very good value for nice roses....but not the calibre of an Austin or Meilland.

The claim has been made that same level of attention to plant quality and services will be maintained, but the roses will be priced at $21.95, just short of a 100% price increase. For a near doubling of price, better roses and superior service should be the new business policy. Paying way more for the same thing....I don't know?.....doesn't make sense to me. Does anything I am questioning cause you to question things also?

    You ask: why buy Chamblees?

What exactly was purchased, other than the name and stock? The land?

If so, then I guess: Oil

It’s possible that the most obvious answers are the correct answers.

They are keeping the Chamblees name so they dont have to start from scratch.

They are moving to a location that’s more convenient to the new owners.

They doubled the prices because that is the range most of their competitors charge.

I don’t have a tinfoil hat, so take that for what its worth.

Yeah I was wondering why they were so cheap? the price isn’t much different since the shipping charge change anyhow. I always build cost of shipping into the pricing for my business, people like to know before clicking add to cart what they are getting into. I’m guessing the reason why its moving is that instead of getting one buyer they got two, one for the land and one for the business. Maybe Austin bought the land?

    last modified: 6 years ago

    Am I correct?

The young nursery couple that bought Chamblee's stock and name rights did not buy the land, Chamblee's 31 acre plot. Someone else bought the land itself.

Does anyone know how the 31 acres will be utilized as? Another nursery going by a different name, oil ventures, etc., ?

    Thanks!

    Moses

Land will be sold to another party - the couple buying the roses has a fruit orchard nursery they plan to expand about 15 miles down the road, the land is prime commercial property and will most likely be used for something else. Nice to see photos of the listing, I saved some.........many good memories at this fine nursery!

Thank you. I didn't find the pink Don Juan in their catalog. Am I missing it?

I believe the new owners of the nursery stock will be selling it, they will be doing mail order I think. Not sure when they will be starting mail order but should be sometime this year. Am sure there will be some sort of announcement but I live close and will find out and will post.

I see Pink Don Juan on Chamblees’ website.

So I tried ordering and received my order well in time from the new owners.. had problem with 1 of my plant emailed them twice before hearing back asking for a picture. This was well into 3rd week. Picture sent with no reply. Horrible customer service . I guess.. never ordering again. I spent a good chunk of money on 5 roses.

    I would try calling.

I live 2 hours from Chamblees and went there for many years. I met the new owner......she is young, enthusiastic and I feel that she is really interested in having a good business. This is all new to these people - they are just getting set up and going. I would call and explain the problem. I feel sure she will rectify it. Too many rose nurseries are going out of business.......give these people a chance to make things right.

I agree, personal communication often works best, if nothing else because there's the perception of a real-live person instead of simply words on a page. Any new business must be difficult to operate at first and they do deserve a chance to rectify any mistakes. I haven't looked at their site in a while because the older roses I was interested in no longer seemed to be offered. I'll have a look now to see if anything has changed.

Exactly where will the new nursery be/ location of the fruit orchard?

Havent visited yet, but understand it will be about 15 miles away from the original Chamblees. They bought the name. Their last day of business was a couple of weeks ago, most greenhouses gone, sad, sad!!! Have been going there for years! New one is in Wynona [sp?].

Alameda, Ingrid, ..I gave them a call today and left a message . Didn't hear back. On a positive note, I think You are right. We should give them a chance. Will call them again:)

I doubt it, based on everything I've read about them for the past 6 months. Read this thread if you haven't already: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6376012/one-love-rose-and-gardens#n=42

Might be better to cancel the order with your credit card

Yes, you should cancel your order with your credit card. I agree with Susan.

Seems they're damned if they do and damned if they don't talk about the problems they're having. I know the owner to be a good guy, very passionate about roses, knowledgeable and always has been honest with me. It may well be a problem finding employees. I know they grow an incredible selection of roses, maybe not all for sale just yet. I believe they'll work it out as they're very hard workers.

Erasmus: do you have an update? I ask because you indicated you know the owner, and know him to be a good guy.

Rifis, I do know Raoul to be a good guy in my dealings with him online. He has always dealt with me honestly, sent me a gift rose one time, a beautiful grafted plant . He sent me a box of two roses this spring as a trade and included a couple of free plants. Raoul always has been someone I thought was a very hard worker from all I heard, and who was doing his best to learn. I knew he had a lawn care landscape business and a nursery, One Love. Then he bought Chamblees.

I have heard various things about this....what I read here and what I have heard from Raoul. I am really sad to hear the negative stuff. I am not in a position to know for sure what is going on. I do think they seem to have had a perfect storm of bad things happening...from someone slandering them online to employees turning out to be liabilities to an actual tornado. I know another person on these forums also has had nothing but positive dealings with One Love.

I am not going to sit here and say that people who have paid their money and not received their plant or an email should be ok with it or that for sure it'll all work out fine. I don't know . I think they paused shipping for a couple of months due to heat. All I know is that over the past few years I have never had any impression that Raoul is not an honorable , hard working true lover of roses and a kind, generous person. I wish all concerned a happier outcome.

I think I have resolved my order finally. contacting them via Facebook messenger worked for me. Last message I got states they now have new customer service personnel. I told them I would accept credit in lieu of a refund, and I’m all set now. If anyone is having issues, I recommend contacting them vis Facebook messenger.

I think the most troublesome allegation is that they generated fake Paypal refund receipts without any funds actually being returned to the customer (review from Yelp).

We all wish a fledgling rose business well, but how can this be anything other than outright fraud? Did Paypal also get hit by a tornado, tortured with drought and smashed in a car accident?

    Markay

I would not have been comfortable with a merchandise credit from them. I would not consider myself all set with the transaction unless the money was back in my bank or the plants are in my yard. But I hope for your sake they make good on your mechandise credit.

    Erasmus

I understand that you and at least one other have had good experiences with them. You’re also a peer in addition to being a customer, so they may have been more motivated to serve you. Several of the folks that have aired grievances have been active on rose forums and websites for years with no other motive than to discuss roses and rose care. So I take their experience with Chamblees/One Love on good faith too, just like I take yours.

What amazes me is that they continue to have sales but can’t even ship out their products let alone communicate with their customers. Until operations can be restored, they shouldn’t continue taking orders - it is fraud, otherwise, is it not? They claimed their phone lines were down for a time this summer but even when they were apparently repaired no one answers or returns a call. I’ve tried contacting them as well via Facebook Messenger and email - no response. I’ve been working with my credit card company to get a refund for two orders I placed in May. I’ve received great roses from the previous owners and as recently as last year and so this has been very disappointing.
