I have found a site that gives more info. (http://socalcamelliasociety.org/?p=196) I think the parent plant is Betty Sheffield and it says that the flowers are not stable. It is so interesting that I will still use any cuttings that root. I don't know what is up today but I tried to post pictures 3 times and they never came thru.

I temporarily had one of those "unstable" camellias too. Sometimes this is caused by genetics and other times by viruses. Depending on which one, you may get semi true results.

quite a few cultivars are known for this pattern of flowering. 'la peppermint' is the first one to come to mind.

i had a friend years ago whose pleasure was to perform multiple grafts of different cultivars onto a single shrub. this could also be what you are seeing on an older specimen.
