Replace Kitchen Cabinet Doors

I like my kitchen layout. I like the color of my cabinets. The problem is that the bottom cabinet doors and drawers are knicked and scratched and a bit beat up. The top cabinets are in good condition. I've tried filling the scratches with those color markers and crayons, but it really didn't fix the issues all that much.

My thought was to just replace the drawer and door fronts for the entire kitchen with a similar finish to what I already have. The approximate cost is $6000 without installation. I was quite surprised to say the least. Now I am wondering if it's worth the cost or if I should just hire someone to paint them.

I want to figure out the cabinets before I get rid of my green marbled Formica counter tops. Any suggestions?

I ran into this in Calif. I priced out a cabinet maker to make the doors which was a reasonavble cost. The price to have them painted professionally with commercial-type lacquer was two times more than the cost of the doors. When getting quotes, do your homework on what type of paint finish you will get. Commercial lacquer vs. big box enamel in a can is a world of difference. Good luck with your project!

If you don’t like the look of dinged/chopped cabinets then painted cabs will drive you crazy and isn’t the answer for you. If you’re just looking for a visual change, how about a new backsplash and undercabinet lighting?

If you like your cabinets, it is worth the cost.

Do not paint them. They will chip faster and it will be much more noticeable.

Get hardware that has a backplate on it to save your future cabinets.

Think about getting a cabinet built in around your fridge while you are at it.

New cabinets are not cheap. Nothing about kitchen renovation is cheap. Those that say, "I renovated my entire kitchen for 5K" are showing you pictures from far away and not all the things that are wrong with what they have done. Quality costs money.

I would not suggest getting new doors and trying to match the stain to the rest of your kitchen. As time goes on a cabinets finish changes colour slightly with the sun and other environmental factors. Even if a cabinet company gets a perfect match initially (which is highly unlikely) the stain will be different and will not continue to change in the same way meaning in the future your cabinets won't match.

Best option is to try to touch up until the time at which you are ready to replace your cabinetry.

I found a local company that sells the same brand of cabinets that I currently have. Hopefully one of these weekends I'll get over there to price it out. I really want to stay with the same style and color. I don't think painting is for me.

Just call Furniture Medic. The doors are the most expensive part of the cabinets. 60-80% of all new cabinets. Plus, wood changes color as it ages. New wood will be s cereal shades longer than your current cabinets.

Painting is probably the least expensive, but I would get a professional. You can add a slight contrast in the crevices of the door detailing. Example would be off white or cream with a sand color detail.

If in the future, you are definitely changing the countertop, I would try to decide if you want light cabinetry or dark cabinetry. The countertop color will be determined after the cabinet color that you prefer.

Refacing with new doors, might be another less expensive option than removing cabinetry. I wouldn't only replace the doors. It would be too difficult to get a close match.

Try lemon oil... wipe doors with soap and water and let them dry... wipe slowly with lemon oil, just using old dishtowel. Might surprise you and if it doesn’t work, you spent less than $5 and 20 minutes. Lemon oil will fill scratches
