Match the slate or the parquet. It's a MCM home, with some fabulous original details. The materials used should look like they belong and were original. Be very careful with that cold gray. It is the odd man out here.

Can tge parquet be stained/refinished To a color you like? If you go wood, it may look more pulled together if both wood floors were the same color.

It’s a tough one, we want the cabinets to be two toned (lighter on top) but are worried about choosing a color that is less neutral...thoughts? The top color is off white and the counters are calacatta lasa like the pic below, which shows them with the gray

Restaining parquet floors is not optimal as that wood goes into 4 bedrooms.

Are you replacing the carpet as well?

Which flooring material(s) actually adjoin the kitchen?

All the carpet in the pictures is going...the kitchen flows into the sunroom and then into the main family room. Kitchen currently has vinyl, sunroom and family room have carpet.

Nate Jones , MCM homes often use Black Walnut or Natural White Oak as flooring. Contemporary homes also have similar tradition.

I appreciate everyone’s perspective, especially those discenting opinions. We are going to re-evaluate the color scheme of the cabinets so we don’t lose the overall MCM feel. I think we will probably end up matching the parquet flooring as well. Back to the drawing board!

Cork is a great MCM choice, and you can easily find cork that matches that parquet. It’s squares can echo the parquet.

Many MCM homes used carpet or terrazzo floors to keep the wood overload to a minimum when there were feature walls or ceilings with wood. So you may want to look at the big picture design of adding color and furnishings that help with that when changing over from carpet to a wood tone. That’s one reason that a popular choice is also the slate that you also have. It breaks up the wood tones and is period appropriate.

Good choice on revisiting the kitchen colors! Check out some of the MCM home groups on FB to see some great inspiration. Many homes still have their original birch plywood doors even 50 years later. I’d try to keep as close to that in a redo as was possible. Maybe combined with white if the wood monopoly extends to the kitchen also.
