help with backsplash...again...

I dislike tile backsplash behind stove. I was trying to go midcentury and ended up with farmhouse. Easy guys very first reno!! In my previous post I asked about this but I have a new idea. I either rip the tile off to just above pot filler or tile the whole wall (which seemed to be the most popular advice) BUTTTTTT I stain the grout a darker color to give it some edge. What do you think? Is it worth it? Who has stained a large area of grout and been happy with it??

I have never stained grout but I must just say I would give a limb for your kitchen. I think it is beautiful!

You have interest. Lots of interest. If you must see what dark grout would look like, mock it up first before staining.

No where near a pro, just an opinion and trying to pay it forward here. Nice kitchen but something not quite pleasing to the eye to me and do I think it is the stove area. I think the tile clashes with the brick. I don't know about painting the grout- I don't think it would pull it together for me. I'd try doing something with the vent/hood to pull it together and detract from the tile or replace the tile.

Thanks everyone. Yes I wish I went with a different tile myself I was trying to find something that wouldn’t compete with the brick but now it just stands off on its own. Any ideas?

And how hard is it to rip out tile if I choose to do so? I’m ok with the tile but went too far off and it took away the warmth of the paint color
  • 7 years ago

Or paint the tile the same color as the wall.

I'm thinking the problem is the tiles are shiny and everything else seems matt. I also dont think you really need another texture in there.

Question, could you put a cabinet where the hood is now? then put stainless behind?

New cabinetry and new tiles would be optimal but we are low on funds. Was looking for a cheaper alternative or we just sit on this until we do have more money. This house has been a money drain.

How about keeping the tiles and stenciling the entire wall, including the tiles. This would be a very inexpensive option.

So that is so fun! My hubs would never let me though. He was nervous about the dark cabinets!

Anglophila yes that makes sense but we have brick in every single room of the house I’d hate to kill the flow of the house! Example-dining room

just one new cabinet, with the same wood, you dont need to change the others. I think the boxed in hood is really killing the vibe.

Your killin' me smalls with the off center rug in the dining room lol.

Bahahaha omg didn’t realize until now! Good eye! Will fix that and the cabinet is a definite possibly even making a wooden case for the vent hood that matches the cabinetry?

YES! most mid centurys are cased or a cabinet, and that might just be enough.

Just quit while you're ahead. Can't you find a hobby?

I hate to say ...I liked the before picture of the kitchen !

You have so many different finishes in this room--the maple cabinets, painted cabinets, brick, dark flooring, white backsplash! Whew! You need some continuity/cohesion. If you need to change the backsplash, why not continue the brick on that wall?

(BTW, I don't get a "farmhouse" vibe at all.)

The brick was already there. I can’t use it as a backsplash. I was trying to go for the two toned look and yes struggling to pull it together.

I don’t see where I posted a before pic of the kitchen?

Ilikefriday was onto something in that the whole wall should have been done for a cleaner look. You are short on funds so just live with it for a long while. You may decide it's not worth it or someday when you have a few extra thousand lying around you can rip that out and do the whole wall. A patterned encaustic type tile that marries all your colors may be the perfect option.

Definitely do not stain the grout on the white tile. Just live with it until you can do it right.

Thinkdesignlive that tile is fantastic. I love it.

Lastly, if the hood is paintable and you decide you like the patterned tile you may want to paint the hood to match either the maple or dark cabinets. That way you have simplified the whole scheme. Personally I love your kitchen!

Thank you thinkdesign I think we are going to sit on it for a while. We had a lot of hiccups along the way and what I originally wanted did not happen so I feel it is a little hodgepodge.

I agree that your kitchen looks great already! and this may not address the issue you were asking, but have you thought of just adding a little wood to the venthood, almost a trim piece, ties in the cabinets and floating shelves without the expense of a new cabinet over the hood! Just a thought, good luck!

Yes that is a consideration actually! Thank you for the compliment. I didn’t think it looked THAT bad until this thread oh well it’s mine.

it doesnt look bad, you did a great job and I think it has character. not cookie cutter.

Thanks RL it is not cookie cutter that’s for sure

I say NO to stenciling tiles. Paint, maybe...stencils, NO. You already have about seven colors in the kitchen. I would use the brownish runner in a hall somewhere else and find a new runner with gray and deep blue for the kitchen. I love the brick. Any thoughts about painting the natural wood to match the kitchen cabinets’ blue or white of the trim? It feels more like country modern rather than “farmhouse” to me. I like it.
Maybe down the road. If anything I may end up tearing it all down!

I wouldn't change the grout or the tiles. I think the tiles will stand out more with colored grout, and right now they seem like a nice neutral background. I love your kitchen! I like the thought of incorporating a wood trim onto your hood and perhaps painting it to match your blue cabinets, which are beautiful. If the hood is a focal point, the tiles won't be. (Note, you might need to look up restrictions or precautions for having wood trim above your cooktop. Is there a non-combustible sealer?)

I’d have to look I would think so since cabinets are often over stove tops thank you!

I really like your kitchen, too. It has warmth and personality and COLOR.

Your hardware is pretty simple but also classic. I'm trying to figure out hardware for my kitchen. Do you remember what you used? I like that it doesn't have any pocket-tearing bits sticking out the sides of the pulls :)
