I went on a spree last year and got Myrtle's Folly, Belle of Barma, Islander x2, Dark Monarch, Big Brother, and some others I forget what all. Not all of them bloomed last year, so I hope this year, they will.

In the past, I have left mine in the ground and some I grow in pots.

My issue is not the frost but if they will stay too wet when watering the roses etc in the winter. We had an unusually wet winter this year :/ Sometimes, I have rotted the tubers. They like to be dry in the winter. Therefore pot culture or digging them up once it cools off is probably what I will do this year and see if that helps.

SJN, I swore I wasn't going to order any more for this year, but then I got worried mine might have rotted with all the rain we go this winter (over 20 inches in February alone), so I have a bunch of new ones in route to me now...lol. If I lose Senior Ball or Almand Joy, I'll be heartbroken, though. I've had those for many years and not sure they are still in commerce.

Pat I love both of those! American Dawn is especially lovely. The only reds I have, I got last year: Thomas Edison and Chat Noir but neither bloomed last year sooo...

This thread reminded me to check on mine..I just checked on my potted ones (I leave them in their dirt and just dont water them until new growth shows). The ones in pots usually come up before the ones in the ground. Both the Islanders and Bell of Barma are sprouting so I have hope! The others feel firm so far -but no sprouts. No sprouts from the ground yet.

I did get some more Pacific Oceans last month and potted them up and they are a foot tall now.

SJN, I quit buying dahlias from Walmart because I got mislabeled ones so many times, but mine always turned out to be a plain white cactus not those lovely ones you ended up with. I especially like the Pine Island Princessy purple one! May have to try Walmart again for the Pacific Ocean beauties you got. Fingers and toes crossed that my existing dahlias haven't rotted in the ground, but will be at least another month before I'll know unless I go digging in the ground for them...and afraid I'll injure mine if I do that.

We will have to post our survivors later this year when they start blooming! It will be fun to see what made it. I will try to get more pics w dahlias and roses together. I hate to say it, but some of these dahlias really outshine the roses! The roses become the adjunct flowers lol.

I am also worried and tempted to try and dig lol! I would definitely pierce the tubers or something, with my luck.

I do not have the name. I buy them at Costco in the spring, just the tubers. Of course I threw out the packages. It's usually a pack with 2 varieties - 3-5 tubers of each for the larger dahlias. Of course I can't remember. And every year I have the intention of lifting and storing them, but alas I get lazy & never do! I have a cold cellar in my basement, so I really have no excuse not to either, lol! But as I recall they are really inexpensive - under $15 for 6-10 dahlias that grow huge, so I kind of treat them as an annual.

The one you said looks like Pacific Ocean, were ones I bought as bedding plants. They were in 4 inch pots. Great little bloomers all season.

R, I've ordered dahlias from various places online and been happy with all so far. I've gotten them from Brent & Becky's Bulbs, Gilbert H Wild, Swan Island Dahlias (they ship a single tuber rather than a clump, but mine have all done well from them) and even Breck's. I have gotten mislabeled tubers from MZ bulbs, though. Our local nurseries, big box stores, etc., usually have some when its planting time, too.

Pat have you ever ordered from Etsy? I got some of mine from there last year.

No, I haven't. I've ordered about everything else from etsy, but never plants/tubers/bulbs. thanks for the suggestion...will have to check that out. My favorite source has always been a booth at an annual spring festival at a nearby monastery. The Birmingham dahlia society always had a booth at the festival. You could pick out your own tubers/clumps and the society members were so helpful and knowledgeable. I wasn't able to go last year, but a friend said the dahlia booth wasn't there. I don't see them on the list of vendors for this year, either :/

Halloblondie, I planted the ones from Costco a few years back.. and they grew back every year until I got rid of them.. deviding wasn’t fun for me. I am trying to find the smaller ones to add next to roses. The ones from Costco were dinner plate.. too big:)

Hi Raoul, sorry we went kind of rogue on your original question, but I guess you were able to tell we like roses and dahlias together...lol. Personally, I prefer mostly the balls, collarettes and midsize (4-6") decorative types over the dinnerplates for mixing with roses. As some others mentioned, the dinnerplates are so big, they can outshine the roses. I do like a few dinnerplates for back of border or with large roses that can hold their own amongst them.

Hey Pat, it’s no problem! I love seeing all those beautiful pictures ! Thank you for the advice. I guess I was originally just unsure they’d be compatible because I never see pictures of them together nor listed as good companions. You guys have definitely answered my question, and inspired me to Get more Dahlias too!

@rbains5- I get what you are saying about the dinner plate ones, they take up as much space as roses. Sometimes they sell the medium size plant bulbs as well. I had some last year that only grew to 20-24 inches. Also when they have the cell packs of annuals they will have the smaller bedding type dahlias. These I planted in front of roses & they grew about a 1-2 feet wide and a foot high.

Yes, I went crazy and ordered many from Old House Gardens.Then I tracked down Café au Lait aka "the wedding dahlia".Then,I found some at Walmart,Aldis,and Kroger.

That's awesome! I might go get a few more at Walmart. I have had good luck lately with them. One of the Pacific Ocean dahlias that I potted up last month, actually has flower buds already, I'm so excited!

I have had bad luck twice with Cafe au Lait. I dont know if its just me, or if it just hates Florida?

These photos are wonderful!! I ordered a couple , KAs cloud and apple blossom. I was so looking forward to seeing them !! They are still boxed and I’m not sure what to do since we are moving . Should I pot them and try to see them start ? Ugh . Such a bummer.

I think you should just take them with you. If they are still boxed it shouldnt matter they are dormant. KA's cloud is gorgeous I hope you get to see it plus post photos lol.

I picked up a 10 pack of these at Costco this week. So we will see how they do. I think I should have gone last week, these were the only dahlias they had left. Normally they will have at least 2-3 varieties. I do like them, I was hoping to get 2 different packs though.

Sultry, It's still a bit early for the dahlias to be up here, but I did check on them today. One of my Myrtle's Folly and two other dahlias in that same bed have started coming up. None of the others in that bed are up yet (my Belle of Barma is in that bed, but no signs of life yet). No above ground growth on my other Myrtle in another bed or any of my dahlias in other beds...so still don't know what survived the soggy winter, but I'm hopeful) I didn't find Pacific Ocean anywhere local, so ordered it and Break Out (supposedly similar to Café au Lait...my café au Lait must have been mislabeled...mine doesn't look anything like the gorgeous pictures of that dahlia) from Breck's.

Blondie, those dahlias look beautiful. I hope you post lots of pics so we can see how they look. I need to get to my Costco and see what they have left. I got a membership there last year but hardly use it. We go to Sams Club which seems to have more of what we buy than the Costco does here. I dont know why. Costco is newer to this part of FL so maybe they will get more stuff in eventually.

Pat, Of the two times I tried growing Cafe Au Lait: one time it never came up and the other it had a few blooms then died right away. I wonder if likes a cooler or less humid climate. There are apparently, dahlias that are better for warmer climates. I saw a list somewhere...

I googled Breakout and its lovely! I love those soft colors. I realized most of mine are brighter colored hmmm.

I think you will like Pacific Ocean! I have never ordered Dahlias from Brecks yet. Good to know about all these sources!!

Kaleidoscope, our Aldis never has any plants or bulbs. I hear of the ones south of us having roses and all kinds of stuff. I haven't tried Old House Gardens yet, let us know, if they are a good source!

Great to find this thread -- even if it is 6 years old! I've become a bit obsessed with dahlias now. They've made me so happy. Late summer, roses are not big bloomers here, but I can lay off the roses and enjoy the dahlias late summer! And for the person who can't keep gophers out -- I use gopher wire cages. Diggers cages, not the Gonzo net stuff. Gophers chewed through a Gonzo stainless steel net to eat my dahlia tubers. Anwyay -- the deer don't seem to do for the dahlias (knock on wood), though they lOVE the roses. I agree with above poster that you need to be strategic about plant heights. I didn't realize some of my dahlias would get so huge! And I'm excited, @pat_bamaz7, as I just ordered Myrtle's Folly for next year! The pre-order with Triple Wren and Bonny Blooms...um...I went a little crazy. Anyway -- here are some photos:

Deborah, you are sorely tempting me with your stunning dahlias. The color range with those subtle shades is putting our roses to shame (not really). Your splendid bouquet really brings the shading out. I love the crisp petal packed look of the blooms, too. I think my two favorite individual blooms are Caitlyn's Joy with its gorgeous, slightly offbeat color, and KA Cinder Rose. I love its center. I do wish the names of the plants were simpler, and more appealing. Same with all the new rose names. Thanks for showing us your gorgeous dahlias. I'm jealous. Diane

I grow dahlias with roses. I never lift them anf they generally winter over, but I mostly start mine from seed. They are easy from seed and I really like the watercolor mix from Select Seeds.

Beautiful dahlias, Markay and Forever (love the bouquet with the bicolored dahlia). As for hardiness, I think 7B-8A is the start of dependable hardiness. Here in zone 7A, they are not reliably hardy, but may winter over if temps are fairly mild during winter. Markay, how wonderful to have such lovely results from seeds. I love the apricot and off white blend, and they are so floriferous. I usually order seeds from Select Seeds each year, and I'm going to possibly try those dahlia seeds. Diane

Markay -- those are gorgeous dahlias! The ones I grew from seeds a couple of years ago didn't look great -- and they were all the open flower kind. This year I didn't grow any of those, and I harvested some seed from my Mocha Jake. So I'm hoping I get some interested, big flowered dahlias from seed next year! I've seen photos that show how wildly different seedlings can be from their parents.

Diane -- I went a little crazy ordering dahlias online, and I won't even get them until next spring! I've decided not to dig up the dahlias in the ground, but moved my pots under the eaves so the tubers don't rot with all the rain we're getting. We got 4" from yesterday afternoon to this afternoon. And we are due for another 4" tomorrow. I've got sand bags in front of my garage (typically we get water under the garage door in big rains b/c of how the slope/driveway were designed). I filled all of my water barrels by last night. So now we just hunker down.

This might be the last dahlia of the season, Cafe au Lait. I thought it was done, cut it all the way down, then it grew all new foliage and produced this!

Quick question: does anyone have advice on keeping leaf miners out of both dahlias & roses?

DDinSB your dahlias are beautiful. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. So one of my dahlias did not go dormant last year and bloomed this month. I sprayed it with capitán Jack and something is still bothering it

Sorry I didn't see this sooner! Looks like Leaf Miners. Mine had that last year, and you have to get right on top of it with the Captain Jack's, apparently. They also go for my lemon tree leaves. You might ask your local nursery for a good plan. I have been spraying the spinosad proactively about every 2-3 weeks. But now that sun is here and marine layer has lifted, I have to be careful I don't burn anything...

Gorgeous, DD. I also grow roses with dahlias but they’re in containers so it’s a different story as far as the lifting goes. Honestly it doesn’t work well and I usually just buy new dahlias in spring, cheap ones.

Helen -- I may not have to lift in my climate, but because I have gophers I've planted in gopher wire cages, which means I will have to lift so that they don't get mangled (and potentially open to more disease) by growing into/around the gopher wire cages. Some are in pots. My Cafe au Lait does not like its pot. Kind of sad looking. But the CaL in the ground is going gangbusters. Do you see good results in pots? I had Megan Dean in a pot last year, and it was okay. This year I put a tuber in a big raised bed, and it's a different dahlia. I have a few in gigantic Costco pots that are looking good so far. How big are your containers? Maybe I need a ton of raised beds everywhere! I picked up Karma Caroline at a nursery last year, and it's a shorter dahlia. Was great in the pot last year, but so much better in the ground this year. I might be doing something wrong! Please share your secrets to success!
