Your furnishings are very beautiful! The stone has a very warm look....tans, browns, etc. Your walls, rug, and some accent pieces are a cool blue. I think that is the disconnect.

I'm so lazy, I always go for the minimal fixes. Adding on to what grafefruit said, try switching out the brass trimmed firebox cover for black metal and get some wrought iron fireplace tools. You could add some cool colored cushions for the off season when you're not using it. Frankly I think it is lovely, so I would just let it be its lovely self and not obsess. Your home is gorgeous and inviting as it is.

White wash it!

Not solid white but lightly brush over with white paint. Stucco paint is what you need to use I believe.

Love it! Don't paint it, you would be removing value. I would improve upon the fire screen and tools. Maybe add a simple floating style wood mantel the same stain as your floor, but it looks fine without one.

Agree with the above comments on switching out the gold firebox to black. I would also leave the stone since it speaks to the era your home furnishing style is reminiscent of, mid-century. It might be shadows but I would do a deep clean to the top of the fireplace so it looks brighter, similar to the base of the fireplace. Then, focus on trying to add more brown/warm tones to your living room accents to help make the two work together better.

I love the stone, I would leave it. But I would either replace the firebox or have it powdercoated black - usually they can come in and do the work without having to remove the whole thing. Other than that, leave it! I love the mid-century feel.

ALTHOUGH, just saying, a double-sided fireplace here would be absolutely amazing.

The stone looks great, but the brass elements detract. I'd remove the brass screen and have a sleek black and glass door installed instead, and switch out the current fireplace tools for black ones with a contemporary look.

A wraparound mantel is a cool idea too.

Keep the stone as is and get rid of the brass. Either add some MCM artwork above or look into a mantel to help break up the stone and actually tie it into the design.

I think the rug and your painting could be replaced with something warmer...the rest of the stuff works...Your paint could be a touch warmer, but you're probably not willing to change that...

I like the fireplace and agree with others who have suggested getting a black fire screen. I would not add a mantel as I think it would interfere with the mid-century style. I don't see any logs inside, so I'm wondering how often you use the fireplace. If not often, I would store the tools elsewhere and replace with either the plant or another decorative item.

• I will be replacing the carpet for something less blue and more neutral.
• Another round of cleaning (I have cleaned this so many times), but hard to get off all the grind
• I like the idea of getting rid of the tools and adding a plant, since I don't use the fireplace. I think the nature should look good with the stone.
• I really like my walls white, so I'm gonna pass on the painting of the room. But I think I will be adding a brown frame to the artwork as a way to provide more of an organic feel, and contrast to the piece.
• Struggling a bit with painting the fireplace screen because that piece is in really good shape (no scratches) and I actually like it, some of the lamps have a very similar metal, coloring so I will hold on the black until I see the rest of the changes

I think the brass surround works, too.

There's nothing wrong with the brass fireplace accessories, they just draw your eye towards them because they are so sparkly compared to the rest of the room. Not necessarily what you want the eye to be drawn towards. You can paint brass, I did. But you don't have to, it's a minor detail, the room is super groovy. I'd put a cool large clock over the fireplace because I like clocks. Something like RL posted.

It looks like there is soot on the upper portion. I wonder why. Please don't paint or white-wash it.

If it were mine I'd have the stone cleaned and add a timber rap around mantle. You have a beautiful room.

I really like your fireplace. I have a similar surround and just lightly sanded the brass and painted it black with high-heat black paint that I bought at HD for around $8.00. Also it really made a world of difference and to this day is my biggest "bang-for-the buck."

Yes, it's dated--by that nasty 1980s brass screen and accessories. Swap them out for all black and wrought iron tools.

As for cleaning--what are you using? Go to This Old House website and search for a video on cleaning masonry. Use what the mason says on there. You may have to use a poultice on the top.

You don't paint a fireplace like that unless you're a host on some garbage HGTV show who is getting paid by a sponsor to use some paint and who then walks away from the project.

Here you go. Yesterday I spent the night working on the frames for the art, and I think they make a huge difference. Was not able to find teak in Home Depot so I just bough hemlock and stained to match coffee table. This new rug is super comfy and I think it adds a bit more of warmth to the room. Still need to do some cleaning to the fireplace and maybe introduce some different more warm colored pillows to the room, but progress has been made :)

It looks so nice! The frames make the pictures pop and the rug brings it together. And you did it in two days!! Geez, when I try to figure something like this out, two YEARS later, it still looks the same lol.

@pennydesign yes, I do some leather :) so far the one "leather" pillow I have is faux, but I love those pillows you sent, I may get a couple of them just to amp the warm tones in the space. I have also been working on the console opposite to the chimney and just introduced some more earthy tones in there. Will send a pic shortly.

Here you have the pic of the other side of the room. Pretty sure I will be returning the branch and only leaving the decor on the left side of the console. But I'm pretty happy with the room now. :) At the end the only thing the fireplace needed was a wash and some changes on the existing items already on the room :)

Beautiful room! The frames are a lovely touch. Great job. Love your new rug but the previous blue ones were nice as well. I agree that the shiny brass detracts a wee bit but honestly, there isn't that much of it that I'd fuss over it. Matte would look better. I wouldn't add a mantel and disrupt the fireplace's mid-century style. Good luck cleaning it. Would you report back on that? My stone cleaning attempts weren't that successful.

Well done! I’m impressed with the transformation of an already nice room. I love the reading nook in the corner on the last photo. The only tiny thing I’d suggest is to treat yourself to a replacement register for the white one in that corner. The rest of the room is beautiful, and that will complete it ;-)
