Nice choice of curtains and floor.

Have you considered carpet tiles that you can click together to form a rug? If one gets too dirty you can replace it, or some carpets allow you to clean them under the tap. FLOR has a wonderful selection and you can go as wild and colourful or as subdued and calm as you like.
I believe they are also mentioned in the ideabook.

Hi....What kind of hardwood floors do you have??? I must say that area rugs under a dining table have to be large
enough so the chairs when pushed back, are still on the rug. Even at that, they don't move in and out that easily. I like your dining table, and Ballard has slipcovered dining chairs on casters, which work very well on carpet, although the bare floor is nice.
I do understand your problem with the living room, and want to suggest a pattern with colors dark enough to hide
the soil. West Elm has some nice rugs, you might want to check that out.

What about these rug options. Do gray/blacks. Or do red. (Would need to change pillows

The floor is actually a Pergo laminate called hawaiian curly koa. I see your point about the benches/chairs sliding out on the dining room carpet. I was just worried about not having anything that "pops" or breaks up the room from the dining room to the kitchen (see the picture below). Should I put a small rug in front of the sliding door area?

Also-- what color would be best for the living room? What kind of pattern would work without competing with the curtains?

A synthetic material is probably the easiest to clean. Or an indoor/outdoor rug could be a good choice.

Hi...Personally I like it without a rug, it's a nice flow into the kitchen. I can't really see in front of the sliders, if an
area rug there would help with dirt coming in then that might be a good reason. The other thing I can't see, what colors are in your kitchen? Back to the living room, I thought the drapes from both rooms were the same and was going to suggest doubling them up in the dining with longer rods, they are close on color, so it might work.
The living room then could be treated individually, and would help in choosing a rug, the rug should be large enough to allow the sectional legs to rest on it, and a pattern that hides soil. Once you've found the rug the
window treatments will be easy, I don't think long drapery panels that are behind your sectional work.

I found this one that I like that has both the green and blue tones... do you think its too much with the curtains?

Looking at the living room viewing into the dining room it may stand out a bit too much. The rug itself is a nice rug though. Of the pics that are listed above I vote with Chemayne.

3 kids and husky? Go with flor, everyday of the week. And buy an extra 3-4 tiles to have on hand. Swap it out for a beautiful, fussy care rug when the kids go to college and take the dog with them. As for the dining room, why would you want the extra work of a rug under the dining table? Do you not have enough to do? Personally, I will never put a rug under a dining table as I really hate cleaning food out of fibers. But, hey, that is me. I also think NOT having a rug under your table goes with your style. Flor has SO many options and some of them you simply cannot tell they are carpet tiles. But when the dog gets sick or the kids knock your red wine off the cream ottoman (that alone will give you tons of cleaning opportunities...) at least you won't have to replace the whole thing. You can also simply take the 1-2 tiles that got blasted and wash them with the hose, dry them in the sun and put them back if the washing works. Additionally, the tiles let you do a custom size that works best for your layout. Hard to tell from pictures but I'm thinking you might not want to go standard sizing in your space. If you really hate the flor options then I would investigate some higher end indoor/outdoor rugs. Again, some of the options they have now are really hard to tell they are indoor/outdoor, they are soft to the touch, come in amazing pattern varieties and they make clean-up super easy (again, haul to driveway, wash with hose, dry in sun, ta-da!) Good luck. It is a really pretty space. Clearly you have made good choices so far, don't doubt yourself now. But don't make your life harder than it has to be either :-)

Ha tkc9po! Your post cracked me up!! I guess I have some thinking to do. Maybe if I don't do the rug in the dining room I can spend the money on the FLOR tiles for the living room. I'm looking at the website and I'm completely overwhelmed, though. Are the design services free? I'm not sure what style/colors to use!

Yep! Don't do the rug in the dining room, spend a little more money on the living room rug. FLOR is ideal. And I'm thinking that the size rug you currently have is too large. It needs to be away from the fireplace a bit. And it would be great if you could have a size rug that goes somewhat under your sectional, so all front feet of the sectional are on it. Either that, or go for the width you have now, but shorter.

I think with the waves in the curtains, you may prefer a less "striped" look... and a more all-over pattern of some kind. The stripes and wave stripes compete. Color will surely enhance this already great room. Try the teal as an accent if you like that color:-) with grey or sand tones. The Full Bloom Pigeon would be perfect for that room paired with Made you look turquoise. - I'll add a pic tonight for you of the ones I just did for a client here in Chicago burbs... they really look amazing.

I appreciate your help Letitia. I used the design service at FLOR and this is what they came up with, but I have to say I'm not in love with either of them. :(

I'm probably driving everyone crazy with all these posts but I took everyone's suggestions to play up the color without getting too stripey and someone else had suggested using citron or tangerine to give the room a "pop" so I created these two FLOR rugs... Thoughts? Everyone's been so helpful and I really appreciate it! I'm so indecisive. :)

I love the accent pillows you found that have found. Have you looked at Flor's Lasting Greatness in indigo? It is pretty graphic, but might work well with overall scheme. You might also wait and watch and see if Flor periodically does a sale. I noticed that you can also create a border with strips of the tiles cut down. what about the green solid color you chose as an accent border? I would square the rug off so that it goes under the front feet of the couch in both directions at least 10" and extends past the couch at least a foot (preferably so that it does not come closer to 1' from a wall on any side. I liked using color you already have in the room, personally. Add a pop of another accent color in a throw or some accent pieces.

Actually just played around with a square rug with all tiles quartered using Lasting Greatness indigo in center and kiwi color on edge all the way around. In textural pattern or plain solid. Pretty fun options!

Did you by any chance save a pic of the rug you created? Can't picture what you mean with all tiles quartered.

When I have a bit more time later today, I'll photoshop some of the others in too, so you can get sort of an idea of how it looks.

Thanks tkc9po! That's what I was just working on. Mine looked pretty much the same except without the cuts (see below). If I do all the cuts will it come with all those little tiny squares? It might make it easier for my kids to rip apart with all the seams...

Hi.....I'm not a big fan of carpet squares, they look to casual for a living room. If you are going with one of the above the one on the left is ok, but the green border on your beautiful hardwood floor doesn't work. I'm assuming the black and white is to go with the existing drapes???

Okay, here are a couple of the rugs. Have to add that they are probably off-scale. Personally I like the first one, the striped one the best. But there are so many more possibilities....
