I'm sorry for your sad news about your dog. I know how shocking it can be to get that news. My miniature schnauzer was diagnosed with lung cancer and it was such a surprise to me. But he had been panting quite a bit and I thought maybe he was just hot. The vet (a specialist) who made the diagnosis intimated that surgery was a possibility for him. But after talking with my vet, and hearing what surgery and recovery would be like for a 14 year old dog, providing he came through the surgery, convinced me to let him go. While he looked fine, I knew he was not and my vet said if the cancerous mass ruptured, he would rapidly be struggling to breathe. I did not want that to happen to him. I took him in a couple of days later so that his passing could be peaceful. I wish you strength to make that decision as well.

Oh dear, what a heartache. There are many pet lovers here, so please know you have our sympathy and understanding. We love them so much, but their lives are too short. When he's not enjoying life any more, when he suffers, it's time. You know. So very sorry.

My 14 yr old dog was diagnosed with liver cancer last week. He suddenly became ill with 106 fever and tests showed enlarged liver with a mass. Cytology came back positive. At the same time, blood tests showed he was also suffering from pancreatitis and that is what caused the fever etc. After 2 days the fever went down and he started to eat. We came close to deciding to put him down but after lots of research I decided to bring him home. He's on an antibiotic and pain med and after 36 hours home he was back to his energetic self. The vet also prescribed cerenia but I stopped it after my dog's appetite & energy returned. The med has its own set of side effects and I wanted to eliminate what I could. I'm watching him closely and a 24 hr ER vet is only 10 minutes away if anything suddenly changes.

Some of the liver cancers are slow growing and I'll check with my vet next week on what type my dog has.

Each case is different but I suggest you research what symptoms to watch for to know when your dog is struggling. I'll take my dog in when it's time, but as long as he's running around and scarfing down food I plan to spend lots of time with him.

It's totally understandable why you couldn't make 'the' decision while at the vet. Sometimes we need time to absorb the whole situation.

I'm so sorry, hugs to both of you ... I too totally understand why you couldn't make that decision right then. I recently had to make that decision for my 15 year old cat that had been diagnosed with cancer in January 2018. We did a year of chemo, cats seem to handle chemo well, then he started to deteriorate. I knew it was time.

Spend some time with your dog, and see how he's doing. You'll know when he's had enough.

Annztoo...My vet also prescribed Cerenia (only for 4 days), also Pepcid and Prednisone. He is doing so much better and has a very good appetite. Thank you for sharing your story. His liver is also enlarged and the vet said the mass could rupture. Of course I don't want this to happen and will research as you suggested.
